We were cruise virgins when we sailed in the Mediterranean on the Queen Victoria in August 2008. We chose Cunard on a basis of recommendation and reputation and because we liked the idea of traditional formal cruising and being able to use our rather basic ballroom dancing skills.

Initially we were disappointed in Cunard as a VERY LATE flight change to Venice cost us a lot of money and no hlp was offered to people who would already have made connecting flight arrangements. Once on board the initial reaction from quite a few people was "Well she's not the Queen Mary is she?" We of course could not say.

Our stateroom was quite compact but it was clean, comfortable and beautifully decorated. Suitacses that fit one inside the other when empty were a big bonus as there is nowhere really to store them. The bathrooms and balconies are not large and we felt that perhaps it was not worth the extra money for the balcony as we used it so little.

Despite all that though, by the end of the holiday everyone agreed on how much they had enjoyed themselves. The ship was clean and pleasant and the service was good throughout. The food of course was as delicious as to be expected. The Lido provides a convenient and casual alternative to the Britannia. Of course its very convenience means that it can get very busy at peak times. The Lido could be improved by having tables already set, floor walkers offering tea and coffee and a maitre d' to organise tables. As it is, it is a little bit of a free for all, but these are generally minor points. We certainly preferred the breakfast and lunch there as you could just help yourslelf and it was quicker especially if you wanted to go ashore. The room service breakfast was a scant offering and if you have abig appetite order two of everything!

Diner in the Britannia was a treat. Our table was possibly in one of the worst locations. We were pushed into a corner and were near a service point - which could have its advantages! However, we built up such a good rapport with our fellow table members that it was half way through the holiday before any of us noticed how badly positioned we were! In fact we were having such a good time that we were often among the last to leave. Service at diner was sophisticated and unabtrusive just as it was in the Todd English. They did not fall into the common trap of making the food too heavy or rich or overfacing you. For the calorie concious there is also a light menu. The evening dining experience gave the whole holiday a true traditional ambiance. The only complaint we had regarding food is that any soft drinks ordered through room service are NOT included in the pre-paid soft drinks package.

Entertainment was good and covered a variety of tastes - so don't expect to enjoy everything. Particularly good was the concert/cabaret the Cunard singers put on one night in the ballroom. On every other night the ballroom was used as a ballroom and there was a five minute demonstration by the professional dancers. It would have been nice if we could have seen more of the professionals dancing either as show or even just mixing in with the guests on the floor.

We only took advantage of a couple of the day trips and generally we thought they were expensive considering you could do almost everthing they can yourself for a lot less. That is not to say that the trips were bad, they weren't: they were quite comprehensive and again catered for different tastes. However we didn't think it was necessary to take an hour and a half out of the trip to Rome for lunch. Just one word of warning though, if you do go into Rome or any other place on your own make sure that there are at least a couple of trains spare to get you back to the ship on time - you don't want it sail off without you!

Overall we chose Cunard for a tradditional style of cruising with a high standart of service and culinary delights. The Queen Victoria, sleek and contemporary, did not disappoint. If fact we have booked to go to the Black Sea next year.
