A great World Cruise

We have cruised with Cunard several times and on the whole we like them and their ships. Our voyage was a 107 day World Cruise and we enjoyed every day. The ship overall is fantastic with great decor, plenty of space and lots of activities. We stayed in a Q6 and ate in the Queens Grill, both were very good and we particularly like the choice of when we eat, it meant there was no rush to get to a "sitting". What were the real positives? the food was very good, the service A1 and the staff were very flexible re our needs (food wise!). The theatre lives up to all the hype and is without question the best one we have been in onboard a ship, plus there are no blind spots e.g pillars. NB the boxes are available to anyone on a first come first served basis for all shows except the shows that involve the Cunard Singers and Dancers. Another very pleasant surprise was the "alternate dining" which has to be booked on the day that you want to use it, it is a sectioned off area in the Lido that provides a waiter served themed meal e.g Indian, Italian, Carvery or Oriental - but be warned book early ie 0700. Our biggest surprise was the very efficient and professional operation of the tour office, a complete opposite to our experience on the QM2. The gym is very good (and very necessary for a 107 day cruise!!). Were there any negatives, well a few:
a) people moaning about anything and everything, just for the sake of moaning - very sad people!!
b) getting on and off coaches - I suggested tongue in cheek to the Captain that he abolished the mandatory lifeboat drill and replace it with a "getting on and off coaches" drill!!
c) people who do not understand the concept of "queue"! an example - as a saddo I would go the gym at approx 0545 ready for it to open at 0600 and there were other saddo's like me in a "casual" queue by the entrance door waiting for the attendant to open up and on several occasions people would walk straight to the front and place themselves between the first person and the door causing the original person to actually move (I hasten to add none of the interlopers were British!!)
d) the golf practice nets were a joke as was the equipment, but I do understand that the facility is there for all and not just those sad enough to think we can play golf. An incident I observed, an American came to the net picks up a large handfull of golf balls and declares he is going to hit them into the sea!!!! I did explain that perhaps that wasn't the best of ideas!
In 107 days we had approx 1.5 days of rain and one of those was in Dubai where we were told they get approx 10 days of rain a year.
e) The wine in the resturants starts at too high a price circa $28.(for a bottle you buy in Sydney for approx $8 aus)
f) Yes shore excursions are expensive but we knew that before we went and we fully understand the commercial reason's why they do not tell you in advance the ports that lend themselves to "self touring", so not really a complaint more self criticism for not doing my homework and being lazy!!
Most of the points above are in reality minor and although in the main they can't be avoided they did not spoil our enjoyment.
Did we enjoy the World Cruise, you bet and would we do it again yes we would and the only thing we would change is to do much more homework re the docking arrangements for each port to enable us to do our own thing in port. We saw some fantastic places and made some "friends for life". Well done Cunard.

Hi there, I enjoyed reading your review. I'm going on the QV in January sailing right around the world, a dream come true. I'm interested in your comments about going ashore and docking arrangements. How would you suggest I find out about that in relation to 'self-touring'. Also can you tell me if there was any wifi access on the ship if I wanted to take a laptop, or are we restricted to using the computer room's computers?
Answer by Bryant, Winchester (17 Sep 09 08:49) to a QUESTION by BELL (16 Sep 09 16:47)
re "self-touring" the first "rule" would be if the town/city has an open top bus/hop on hop off then use it ie Auckland/New York/Sydney - they are very good value and you dictate your own pace eg get off where you want get back on when you want. I would also suggest you ask the tour desk on board where the ship docks, how far from the main city/town eg Barcelona you can walk whereas Rome you need a shuttle (either as provided at a cost by Cunard or catch the train). We found the tour office/desk to be very helpful. In other places friends of ours just hired a taxi and negotiated a price up front ie Samoa/Tonga/Honolulu. The only place where Cunard suggested caution was Rabaul. Another option is to use the Metro ie New York/Sydney/Singapore/Hon Kong - very safe and easy to use. re WiFi, we used the ships internet room, which is very expensive but friends who had wifi used the ships wifi hotspots but would download emails etc go offline draft their responces or new emails and the reconnect - I think wifi still costs 50cents a minute and there are no packages on offer. The ships internet room gets very busy and the system is painfully slow. hope the above helps and we are very envious of you. We will probably do it again in 2011 or 2012

Hi there, some more questions, I know that we don't use cash on board, but what arrangements are made on board for exchanging/obtaining currency for shore trips? Does Cunard arrange this? Do they bring local bank people aboard at various stops? Is there a charge for the exchange? Would it be wise to take foreign currency before boarding? Also how hot did it get in the tropics at that time of year?
Answer by bryant, winchester (02 Nov 09 06:56) to a QUESTION by BELL (01 Nov 09 14:42)
Cunards currency exchange rates are very poor plus they charged a fee to exchange (3.5$ I seem to remember). We took $US and Euro's with us, the US$ was accepted in most places we went to (probably more than 50% of places). For Aus/NZ we exchanged ashore eg got some NZ $ and then changed them to Aus$ in Aus. At some ports an exchange facility was set up on the quay and the rates were ok. Heat is a relative thing, I love it yet my wife does not, the heat was ok but alot of people found the humidity un comfortable and needed to change cloths several times a day.

Thanks for that, very helpful, I think I'll stock up with some currency before we go. And another thing, I read somewhere that passengers who were doing the whole World Cruise got special treatment, extra cocktail parties, for instance, a dedicated area in one of the lounges, was that the case when you were cruising?
Comment by bryant, winchester (04 Nov 09 06:55) about a COMMENT by BELL (02 Nov 09 22:39)
If you were a "Grill" passenger then there were 4 special shore events plus there was a large formal dinner (in our case in Singapore which was attended by the CEO of Cunard) which all "world cruise" passengers attended. There was a short drinks session when we arrived on board and before sailing (in the Commadore Club). I do not recall a dedicated area in one of the lounges however there was a cocktail party each sector (the cruise is divided into four sectors) where a large cake is produced showing the route and a little ship moves to represent current position. By the way we are back onboard this Sat for a 16 day med cruise.

Thanks for that info, I've used shuttle and open top buses before on shore trips when on the QE2 so that's a good tip. Also thanks for the wifi advice, I'll take that on board ( in a manner of speaking)! If I think of anything else I'll contact you again if that's OK. Really looking forward to it all, and can't really believe it's going to happen!

Nice review. We're hoping to do something similar in the next few years. Could I ask what sort of arrangements you made for leaving the homestead unattended for nearly 4 months?

we were fortunate to have a daughter at home although she joined us from Dubai (20days). It is a good point and you need to check your insurance cover, also what needs to be done early in your garden if the spring is mild. Another thing to check - your car battery could go flat. Hope the above helpful

Thanks for the tips. Glad you enjoyed QV, we were lucky enough to be on the maiden voyage in a Q7. The QG restaurant is lovely.
