Having booked our own flights to New York we had to make our own arrangements to transfer from JFK to Brooklyn. Good documentation helped our yellow cab driver to find the location which was not the easiest to find.

On arrival at the Pier what a horror awaited us. Whilst I recognise that checking in some 2,000+ passengers can be a logistical challenge I have cruised on larger ships than this and not had such a badly organised and tedious experience as this. The Pier buildings were not air conditioned and the queue to get through security snaked around the building with passengers really suffering in the heat and no obvious supplies of liquid available. Having passed through security we then joined a queue to queue for the registration booths (not all of which were attended). I saw at least one passenger in real distress and several passengers had to leave partners in the queues to sit down before they suffered any further. On leaving the check in booths I was amazed to find staff at every bend of the gangway to board the ship. They served no purpose other than to be friendly as there were no alternative routes that could be followed.

On reaching the ship all passengers seemed to be directed to just one set of lifts. Suffice it to say that the whole process took approximately 2hrs from arriving at the pier to reaching our splendid cabin.

Sparkling wine in the room was lovely but, desperate for drink we went (with life jackets) in search of a bar. On finding one with the aid of the ships plan, we were told it was closed until after the lifeboat drill in half an hours time. We were directed to an alternative bar but that too was closed!. A very kindly bar supervisor took pity on us and served us a beer on the proviso that we didn't tell anyone! He was superb throught teh voyage too.

Thereafter it got better and better and no complaints on the journey back to Southampton at all. The disembarkation was so well organised, it could not have been smoother.

This was our first cruise with Cunard and the first impressions were awful - such a shame as the facilities, service and cuisine were superb.

Having travelled on the same journey, the waiting time obviously varied depending upon the "staggered" arrival time you were given. Yes it was a tedious wait nevertheless but compared with most airports it was was a doddle
