We are an extended family of 6. My parents are both in their sixties, my husband and I are in our thirties and our children are aged 5 and 8. The Queen Mary 2 had been my son's favourite ship since its launch. Every time we passed a travel agents, he would want a glossy brochure and spent hours pouring over its contents! We were fortunate enough to receive two free child places (one child free for every two adults so my son shared a cabin with my parents). We took flights from Manchester to New York. Cunard had originally booked us to fly with Delta but they changed the weight allowance for baggage close to departure (half what we expected) so Cunard kindly changed us to Continental AND let us fly an additional day earlier at no extra charge. We spent six nights exploring NYC and stayed at the Iroquois which we arranged independently. We joined the Quuen Mary 2 at Brooklyn for our six night transatlantic voyage. Having taken three cruises before, I would have to say it took me a little longer than usual to settle on board. That may well be due to extensive reviews I had read regarding snobbery etc. However, this was totally unfounded and our whole voyage was a very special holiday. Entertainment on board was geared more towards the mature audience and we had two guest artists on board including Doug Cameron. There were a variety of lectures held throughout the day as well as cinema presentations and the awesome planetarium. The RADA performances were great and, although more suited to the more mature audience, were enjoyed by three generations of my family. The highlight of our voyage was probably the meals on board. The food was spectacular! Stunning presentation, delicious and memorable. The only thing I was surprised with, was the children's menu. There was various choices but the actual menu remained the same on every night. There are various bars on board. Our favourites were the chart room, the golden lion and the commodores club. The children's facilities were well organised although our children prefer to holiday more with us. This option is available for the majority of each day, including evenings. We were a little surprised to find the Queen Mary 'moved' as much as she did. She certainly motors across the Atlantic - we made up some time having changes course for a passenger to be airlifted. She does rock and roll though - something I wasnt expecting. The other niggly thing - which will probably make you giggle and really cannot be helped - was that when the ship was experiencing foggy conditions, she had to sound her horn every few minutes ... it doesnt half make you jump when it goes off in the middle of the night!! All in all, a spectacular, memorable and special voyage. x
