We boarded QM2 on a bright November afternoon in Southampton bound for New York. The queue at the new terminal did take a while but was very well organised and we were soon in our room unpacking. The ship was as beautiful as the first time we sailed on her.
I am glad we done the transatlantic but have to say I would not do it again for a number of reasons:
We had already sailed on this ship so nothing was new to us and having 6 nights aboard and only able to get out on deck on 2 days, I found it very tiring and boring. Its far different when you are stopping at a different country each day and the ship is new to explore. We also had the roughest seas the captain had sailed QM2 on! he told us we had handled it well and that other ships in the area had to stop for fear of damage! The waves were spectacular and reaching balconies on deck 6! A lot of people were ill - even though the ship is built for these crossings, we did still get a fair bit of movement - to the joy of others!
The food and service was service was as great as ever and sailing into NY harbour is something I will never ever forget - amazing! I would recommend this trip is done in spring/summer, at least you can sit on deck then.
We also had great company at our evening table.
We were treated to a free trip around NY as we had a late evening flight - we saw all the sights you would wish to see and our guide was great fun.

We have done transatlantic three times, the last time was a back to back voyage which we got at a bargain price. Each occasion has been fantastic but they were all May sailings. The weather was good and we could get out into the fresh air. There were so many activities that we didn't get to participate in everything but I personally love sailing transatlantic as it really gets you away from everything for 6 days and you can really chill out. I am sorry that you didn't enjoy your trip in november but it was good to hear that QM2 was just as good as ever.

Thank you for being honest about the time spent on board. We were thinking of booking a Southampton-New England-Southampton cruise but were worried about the amount of time spent on board. Now we will seriously think about travelling by air to meet the ship.

I would definately sail into NY - it was spectacular after being at sea for so long. others say better to shop in NY and sail home but you wouldn't get the wow factor as NY came into sight ... even at 4.30am! - it was worth getting up for.
Comment by Neil and Ida Down, Southampton (07 Mar 10 15:52) about this REVIEW
Transatlantic crossings are not everyone's cup of tea but everybody ought to experience one. November is often a bad time for a crossing to and because Cunard always use the more northerly crossing that does not help.

I must admit that it does help if you enjoy the activities inboard on a Transatlantic because the weather is seldom conducive to sun bathing at any time although we have on more than one occasion on QE2. Now you have done it and experienced it there is a lot more places to go and see and I am sure that will remember the better parts of this one. It was a good report and maybe it will help one or two others. ...Neil

i wish we had done it as the first time on the ship but we had sailed 12 months earlier on QM2 on a Caribbean cruise. we had the first 3 days at sea on that cruise so had explored all of the ship then. For us I think p & o is more suited as there is more fun factor and not so much stuffiness. In the Caribbean I had a lady congratulate me on laughing as I was the only person she had heard laughing in 11 days! In saying that. The QM2 is fabulous, beautiful, stunning.
