We arrived at Southampton on a sunny warm Autumn afternoon ready to fulfil my life-long ambitionof sailing on a Cunard liner to New York. Our first glimpse of the ship took our breath away as it dwarfed two other large ships in the port that day. The mood was set by the sail away party with cocktails flowing and the excellent Carribean band playing on deck. As it was our Ruby Wedding celebration, we arrived in our spacious well equiped cabin to find complimentary flowers, fruit, champagne and chocolates!
Everything about the ship was magnificent and huge, so much so that we were still discovering new places at the end of voyage! We quickly settled into life on board enjoying the many facilities by day and excellent entertainment by the night. We enjoyed delicious and varied dinners served by attentive waiters in the glamorous surroundings of the main restaurant, but for breakfast and lunch used the buffet restaurant - probably our only gripe! Although there was enormous variety and good standard of food, it was very chaotic and on occasions very difficult to find a table.
Our fellow passengers were an interesting mix of nationalities some, like us, on board for the whole journey, some just for the Atlantic crossing and some Americans who had already been on a Med cruise.
Our outward transatlantic crossing was, thankfully, very calm, but at times made very eerie by fog.
On the day of our of arrival in New York, we were up at 4am and there was an audible gasp by everyoneon deck when we sailed under the Verrazzano bridge with only 3 metres spare!
New York was and the coast of New England and Canada beautiful. The weather could have been better, with rough seas forcing us to miss one port. We were, however, compensated with an extra cocktail party!
Our return crossing was quite rough, but weren't too many problems being such a large vessel.
It was a truly memorable experience on a beautiful ship wit excellent facilities and attentive staff - can't wait to sail with Cunard again!

Thank you for this report. We are travelling on the Queen Mary this August to Norway but are thinking of doing the same trip as you next September - our 45th anniversary. The buffet on any ship is my gripe - don't like them and really try to avoid at all costs. On the Constellation (Celebrity) they have a lovely small cafe next to the spa - only 'healthy' breakfasts but that isn't a bad thing on a cruise! Thanks again.

Why go self-service when you can have both breakfast and lunch in the Brittania Restuarant served in a very civillised manner. That was the beauty of being able to relax and no carrying trays and looking for tables.
