We were celerbrating our respective bithdays and booked this mini cruise a year ago as a present to ourselves. We were kept informed through out our booking of what was needed and hoe to complete all the pre cruise information needed by Cunard. We have been on a number of cruises over the years and always with P&O and thought it would be nice to have achange and try the cruise world flagship company. We arrived at the port in Southampton and found the embarkation easy and quick with the added pleasure of a cabin upgrade. Our cabin was very nice with plenty of space and a good outside view. A bottle of bubbly was waiting for us in the room, a nice touch. There was some confussion with our suitcases and they had not arrived after two hours on the ship. I went to the deck that we were originally booked and came across out cases in the crew lift area. I approached them only to be challenged by a foreign speaking crew member telling me in a firm voice that I was not allowed in the area. I had only stepped three paces through an open doorway from the passageway. I did make my point and ask for the cases to be put in our room quickly please, there was now less than an hour before we were due to have dinner in the Brittania.
The cruise itself was excellent and the ship was everything you would expect from a new liner. There is a big differance between cruise liners and the container style cruise ships. We sailed through the North sea to Hamburg in a force nine gale and you would not have known it. The ship doen exactly what it was built to do and we were glad that it was not on a cruise ship.
The food on board was very good and in the Brittania the food was of a very good standard and just the right portion size to be comfortable when finished. The food in the Lido was always very good and plenty of choice.
We found the entertainment on this cruise very good with a Beatles tribute band being the highlight. There was a show which was not to my taste but the wife enjoyed it. I did have a small dispute on the last night with a waiter who came across with a attatude problem. I had been drinking Guiness all night and while the girl serving explained that it would be a little longer arriving as she had to pop across to the Golden Lion pub to fetch it it was not a problem. On the fourth occassion a chap served me and when he arrived back with the round of drinks the guiness was a tinned version. I questioned him that I had asked for a pint and not 500ml out of a tin. I then had a problem getting the tin open and with out pushing my fingure in to the opening and risking cutting it asked for the waiter to take it back and get me a pint please. he took the tin from me pushed his fingre in top the opening and handed it back to me expecting me to then poor it in to a glass. I discreetly got the attention of waiteress who had been looking after us and asked her to send her boss to see me. Within ten minutes a officer arrived at our table and I had a quite word with him, he could not apologise enough and ensured that there was two pints of Guiness on our table FOC.
I think the moral of this is the fact that the crew know that there tips (wages) are coming automatically as the is a 15% charge on every transaction plus £3.75 per day per person taken from your credit card at the end of the cruise. This not being the case with P&O in the past although it is changing this spring the service did seem to be for friendly and personnel when on a P&O cruise.
Overall the ship was super, the five day break was excellent value for money and the enterainment was of a good standard.
Quality of Food4
Brittania and Lido. We had room service onr morning as well and whilt the food was only warm there was plenty and very nice. The portions in the Brittania was of a reasonable size but comfortable. I am sure if you asked for more then you would get it.
Entertainment4
The entertainment was good with The Beatle Tributre band being excellent.
Shore Excursions1
We did not use the ships excursions as they seemed expensive. We have always found this on any cruise we have been on. We did want to go to Paris when in Le Harve but at $186 each thought it far too expensive. It was a ten hour + day and six of that would have been on a coach traveling to and from Paris.
Staff4
Our cabin steward JoJo could not do enough for us.
Children's Facilitiesn/a
Onboard Activities3
There was enough for the two days we spent at sea. If we had been in warmer climates we would have had the added bonus of sunning on the decks.
Cabins5
Yes very good with the added bonus of being upgraded.
