MS Marco Polo better than expected by Smith, Huddersfield

OVERVIEW: This is a comfortable ship with classic looks, and, with its deep draft, rides well in unkind sea conditions. It appeals to couples and single travelers of mature years who enjoy visiting interesting destinations in the comfort of a ship that is unpretentious yet pleasing, without much ent

We had a three day cruise from Tilbury to Antwerp and Amsterdam on 20 Sept 2012 in a deluxe balacony cabin.

On first view the ship looked to be a hybrid between a ferry and an old cruise liner but this impression didnt do it justice. The common areas of the bars, restaurant and pool deks etc. were as good if not better in some cases than P&O Azura, but they ought to open the pool on a port day though, the hot tubs werre open and were really good.

Cabin size was on the small size, furniture a little dated but clean and comfortable and ok for a few days at sea.

The main restaurant was very nice and elegant as were the bars. The theatre show lounge was very pleasant too.

The food in the main dining was very good equally if not better than the food dished up by P&O at the moment. The buffet dining had a good selection of food for lunch and breakfast for its size, but some of the breakfast items were not so good, quality of the sausages and bland wallpaper paste porridge being the worst and with a bit of effort these can easily be improved, all other foods though were terrific especially the fish, rice dishes and curries.

being a smaller older ship it tends to rock abit on a night unlike the bigger modern ships and we didnt sleep that well as the single beds were quite narrow too.

The show lounge entertainers were extremely good and put on some great shows, the entertainment in the other bars was a little low key with piano players etc and would have benefitted from some veriety such as a rock guitarist or a comedian perhaps.

Would we go again - yes if the price/itinerary was good but not for more than 3 or 4 days.

We were on this ship too and had an outside cabin on Baltic deck (no balcony cabins on Marco Polo) and can wholly agree with your review. Food excellent in restaurant. Buffet ok afternoon tea good could sometimes get busy as the afternoon tea is only from 3.30 to 4.30 so a bit rushed but this happens on all ships when everyone arrives back from trips and have to use the only restaurant open.

Do I assume from your own comments that all your gradings are undersatated by one star? Your "average" onboard activities is gived 2 out of 5 stars (average is surely 3) and good entertainemnt is given an average 3 stars. To try and compare the range of entertainment on the 3000 passenger Poisia with a ship less than a quarter its size is not really an effective comparison. Of course the Poisia will have a greater variety although I must say that I have seen both a comedian and a rock guitarist performing in a lounge on Marco Polo but never on MSC
