Although we had read many poor reviews about Costa, my husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our first cruise with Costa on the Luminosa – an 18 night sailing on 10 April from Dubai to Savona.
The flight with Emirates from Heathrow was very good but the coach transfer to the ship was delayed by about an hour due to someone misplacing their luggage and it was 3am local time before we got to our cabin. Our luggage followed shortly after.
The ship was beautiful and is probably the cleanest ship I have ever been on and that includes Cunard, Celebrity and Princess. All the staff we met were friendly and always spoke. We had an outside cabin and it was very spacious with plenty of cupboard/drawer and hanging space. The bathroom was more than adequate with a good shower and plenty of shelf space for toiletries. Towels were changed twice per day and the bedding was changed every 4/5 days. Our cabin steward was excellent and kept our cabin spotless. He provided ice daily and bowls of fruit were also provided and replenished regularly. An English news sheet was delivered daily to the cabin.
The vast majority of passengers were Europeans ie Italians, Germans and French and the party spirit prevails around the ship. Although it was noisy around the pool area with games, keep fit, aqua aerobics and dance classes every day it was always possible to find a quiet space elsewhere on the ship. There was an unlimited supply of towels for use around the pool and staff made a valiant effort to remove towels from sunbeds that were not in use.
We found the food to be very good in the main dining room, but some of the meat dishes were not of the same quality as on the American ships. The fish was excellent. The restaurant staff were efficient and friendly. The tables are a little too close together in the main dining room and it can be noisy. English speaking passengers were seated together and this included some Americans and Australians. There was impromptu entertainment in the restaurant most nights with dancing and singing by the restaurant staff. One night we all did the conga round the dining room!
Although the buffet was not open in the evenings the morning and lunchtime buffets were very good. Staff were efficient and tables were cleared promptly. A wide choice of food was always available with some excellent pasta dishes.
We had purchased an X1 drinks package and it was a very good buy as drinks on board are pricey. The X1 gave us unlimited wine, water, beer and soft drinks with our meals. If there was any wine left after the evening meal we could take the bottle back to the cabin.
The theatre was beautiful and we enjoyed all the evening entertainment on board especially the Starlight Dancers.
There was a good well equipped gym although I personally did not use it.
The only negatives were the poor on-board library – not many English books - and a poor admin system in place for borrowing. Internet access was limited and expensive.
The ports visited were Fujairah, Muscat, Salhalha, Aden, Safaga, Sokhna and Alexandria. A group of us got together on every port day and shared local mini-bus transport to visit the local attractions. It was a lot cheaper than using the ship’s excursions and great fun. Dubai was the highlight – there is so much to see. We used a 2-day ticket on the ‘Big Bus’ to get around and were lucky enough to get tickets to Burj Khalifa (tallest tower in the world). The fountains at night were also worth a visit and we used a taxi to get from and to the ship.
We only had ½ day in Naples and there was insufficient time to take an independent tour. We just walked round the city and took the funicular to the highest point in the city.
On the last day in Savona we had to vacate our cabin by 8am. Our flight was not until 6.55pm so we were allowed to stay on board until 1.30pm and have some lunch before departure. Once again the coach transfer was problematic as we were not told to disembark until 2.30pm and our coach had been waiting for us for nearly an hour. The journey time to Milan was 2½ - 3hrs which meant that we did not arrived until 5pm for our 6.55pm flight to Heathrow.
In summary we had a wonderful holiday on a beautiful ship. We would certainly use Costa again.
