Just returned froma cruise around the Emirates aboard the Costa Luminosa. Fantastic ship although a bit glitzy. Fantastic food and fantastic staff. The only downside was the entertainment was awful. We have cruised with Costa before and the shows were fine but not this time they were a bit dis-jointed, not put together well and the guest act well I could sing better than that in the shower she was awful. The cabins are beautiful with lots of space and loads of storage space and a shower where the curtain dosent grab you. All in all we had a good time and would not hesitate to use them again. We also had the J2 all inclusive package which was £225 each for the week which we thought was a bit steep and were in two minds whether to book it but we were glad we did as the drinks were a bit on the expensive side once the 15% service charge was added. The J2 package was all drinks under £6.99 (but they did not bother about that) as we did not have champagne, all wine with dinner, all soft drinks, special coffees and teas, everything in the chocolateria including fruit dipped in the chocolate fountain and the most amazing hot chocolates, everything in your minibar and breakfast in your room and all bottled water. Our bar bill when I worked it out would have been £550 plus, so we did save quite a bit and we are not big drinkers.

Is a glass of champagne or sparkling wine included in the J2 package?

J2 Drinks package? You say you had drinks from the CABIN mini bar, did this include the mini spirt bottles I have asked COSTA and they say not allowed, (anything but spirits and snacks) so how would I enjoy a whisky on the balcony? My current plan is to order my whisky in the bar and tip it into an empty drinks can to take back to the cabin to relax on the balcony, but it seems to be a clart on if I can take a mini spirit from the mini bar Your experience seems to be the ideal with this dare I try it? Any info would be appreciated (did you check your bill at the end of the cruise that you were not chareged for mini bar drinks and or chocolate fountain fruit? ) Thank you for the review sailing apr 10 From DUBAI Regards Jimbo

Yes I did check my bill and we were not charged for any mini bar items the only charges we had were the tipping charges which you can ask to be remove if you want to do your own thing. Also we tea from room service a couple of times and they charge 2 euros for that but there was defiantly no charge for the itmems taken from the mini bar although it says no premium drinks and snacks included. We had the spirits and cans and also the snacks but not the bottles of wine. Check what you have in the mini bar as we had no whiskey only gin, brandy, vodka and canadian club but they do not mind you walking around with drinks to take back to your cabin.

I have just returned from a cruise on Luminosa, and the tipping charge could not be removed. It was compulsory

I am surpised as some people on our trip that was 19th Feb did have it taken off as they preferred to tip individuals. Perhaps they have stopped that then.

Question by Darroch, Brielle (02 Mar 10 21:10) about this REVIEW
We have never cruised before and are doing the dubai cruise at the beginning of May. We to have booked the j2 package. We are going with our 15 year old son, so we are hoping there will be lots of activities on board, mainly because he will get bored only with our company. What about excursions, can you give any advice on them. Apart from them being expensive!! I am hoping this will be a great trip as I have finally managed to convince my husband to go on a cruise. We are also wondering about dress, to take more casual or glam gear, any advice? Thanks as any advice will be very welcome

The trips are expensive so do a bit of research and find out what you want to see at each port and then take the free shuttle to the port gate and then get a taxi to where ever you want to go. Some taxis do a tour and if there are four of you to share the cost it works out much cheaper and quicker as you are not waiting around for everyone to get on the bus and you can take as long as you like. Your 15 year old might get a bit bored but there is a games room for them and a 4D cinema and of course the formula 1 sim. Dress code - there are two formal nights and the rest is smart casual. When going ashore shorts are OK if you are not going into any mosques or hotels ie - the Emirates Place or Burg Jumirieh. The Atlantis on Palm Island allows shorts and so do all the shopping malls. We found that there wasnt much to see in Furjeira only a few shops and not much else, so you might want to take a taxi to somewhere else. Muscat sqouk is in easy walking distance from the port. Bahrain we took a taxi tour and went to the Saudi border look out tower and then on to Al alreen nature park and then the race track and finished with a tour of the city which cost us $150 for the four of us but it was good. Dubai we did by taxis between sites and the same in abu dhabi. We did enjoy it but not a lot to see really. As this is your first cruise just remember that it is an italian boat and not like most of the others. The showsin the evenings are not the quality of the likes of P & O and Royal Carribean as not much english is spoken and announcements are done in 5 lanuages all the time ut you will have a good time.

Thanks very much for the review. I will also be doing this trip on march 27th. Not many reviews for luminosa and dubai sailing but it seems you enjoyed it. I have purchased the x1 package that will do for me. Did you do any trips with costa, i have booked mystical muscat and if brave enough will do the hop on hop off bus in abu dhabi. Will wait and see what they have for the saturday dubai trips as i dont fly home till Sunday at 2am. If you have any other pieces of information it would be very welcome.. karen
