Along with five friends, my husband and I sailed on the Costa Classica cruise to Hong Kong/Taiwan/Japan/South Korea/Shanghai in April 2009. The cruise was chosen for the fabulous itinerary and it didn't disappoint. Everywhere we went was extremely interesting and different in it's own unique way and the local people were friendly and pleasant, particularly in Japan, where they went out of their way to help in any way possible. Pity I can't say the same for the crew and staff of Costa. They were, in the main, rude, arrogant and unhelpful. Their sole purpose seemed to be to extort as much cash as they could and they could not have cared less about the comfort or views of the passengers. The COMPULSORY gratuity of €150 up front was a bone of contention with all passengers we spoke to. Nobody was happy about this, particularly as there was a general feeling that tips and gratuities should be discretionary. We certainly would not have tipped our cabin steward. Drinks and excursions were exorbitant, cabins were shabby and, in our case, dirty. Doors were hanging off and the bathroom door did not close, never mind lock. I had to ask for the cabin to be cleaned the day after our arrival. Our cabin steward was never anywhere to be found and did the minimum to keep our cabin clean. To be fair, our friends all sang the praises of their stewards who were helpful and efficient, which only served to make ours seem a lazy skivver. The self service buffet left a lot to be desired and resembled a poor roadside cafe. Staff there were intimidated by their Italian superiors who frequently shouted and abused them in front of passengers. Food was usually lukewarm and pretty predictable. Breakfast never varied from day one. Dinner was eaten in the Dining Room where service was excellent and food very nice.
We did our own thing for excursions after learning from others that they were not particularly good value. The so called "English speaking rep" was arrogant and condescending and was not remotely interested in assisting unless we had purchased Costa excursions. His female counterpart didn't seem to know what she was supposed to be doing.
The Guest Services staff were also totally disinterested in helping anyone who wasn't Italian despite the guests coming from as far afield as USA, South America, Australia, Germany, France, Spain, Hong Kong and UK amongst others.
Entertainment was fairly good in a lovely theatre but the crew's sexually explicit attempts to be funny were completely inappropriate for an audience which contained a number of children. All in all, we made the best of it, despite the crew's unhelpful and, at times, unfriendly attitudes. We certainly WILL NEVER, EVER sail with Costa again. Their priority is making money and not making their passengers comfortable or welcome.
