We were also first time cruisers and picked this particular itinery and cruise line because it seemed like good value. Previous reviews of the Costa Allegra had made us rather apprehensive but can now say with all honesty it was excellant value for money. All the amenities on board were not as bad as we were led to believe, the food in the restaurants was plentiful and well cooked. If anything the cost of drinks other than 'happy hour' was rather expensive but we took one of the drinks packages which were available. The on board entertainment was not compulsary but was there if you wanted it. The ports of call where all very interesting especially Comodo Island where we saw the dragons Our inside cabin was clean and comfortable with plenty of hanging space.
Quality of Food4
Ate most of the time in the Restaurant
Entertainment2
Entertainment only average except for the Spanish Flamenco dance group. The Italian tenor had clearly seen better days
Shore Excursions3
Fully enjoyed our days in Bali,Phuket and the trip to Comodo Island but the trip to Jakarta was just a visit to a local shopping mall. The hassle outside waiting for the bus back to the port was a frightening experience for the ladies.
Staff4
The waiting staff along with our cabin staff were all willing to help at all times
Children's Facilitiesn/a
Onboard Activities3
Always something going on
Cabins4
Very much so, plenty of hanging space and very clean and comfortable

Question by Ms H, Manchester (25 Feb 10 10:21) about this REVIEW
Thank you for your review. We are "doing" a similar itinerary on Costa Classica later in the year. I am trying to find out the cost of a large bottle of water(for the cabin and with our meal)the cost of a decent bottle of red wine and gin and tonic in order to decide which package to purchase.I know that there's a link on this page, but the prices seem out of date. As someone fresh from a Costa cruise perhaps you could help! Thanks in anticipation.

Water 3 euro a ltr, though you can ask for a jug at dinner which is tap water and free Wine starts at 21 euro a bottle,(up to 125 euro) as is house wine 5 euro a large 250ml glass Sprit and mixer 9 euro 70ml spirit standard mixer (UK double and mixer) http://www.costaclick.co.uk/NR/rdonlyres/8DC6ED80-9D78-49AB-B71A-D905A015508E/19067/DrinksPackage_090710.pdf There is also the wine package at 70 euro pp 4 bottles of house wine and 7 bottles of water The J2 you pay £500 pw and would need to drink six drinks per day to break even, any drink below 6.99 euro (ie all basic drinks spirit, wine, or beer/lager) but not taken from you mini bar in cabin, that is not allowed (you would have to order your spirit, then when the waiter comes back order the mixer and mix it yourself in the bars, unless a trained waiter would swipe your card twice) To sum up the J2 is an excellent package if you do not wish to drink on your balcony from the mini fridge and can manage more than six drinks per day each The X1 is good value if you wish to drink house wine or beers at meal times only The wine package is good value if you want to drink house wine at dinner Jimbo
