Summary.
Well up to Celebrity’s usual high standards. It was a good ship and there were interesting ports, fine food and informative lectures.
Onboard.
We were Concierge class which, on Celebrity, means a few little perks like afternoon snacks delivered to the cabin, slightly fluffier bathrobes and flowers and fruit also in the cabin.
Ports and excursions.
We paid Celebrity for two excellent walking tours in Boston and Quebec. For the rest, we used the Big Pink bus in Halifax and Charlottetown. A day ticket in Halifax was particularly good value as it is a bigger city than we had thought. In Bar Harbor, we took a trip on Ollie’s Trolley. Portland, Maine is a pleasant small town but Sidney, Nova Scotia was a little too small for my wife’s liking.
Food and drink.
We were ‘Select’ dining which means arriving at the desk at an agreed time and indicating whether you want to sit alone or with others. We split this approximately fifty/fifty and met quite a few interesting and pleasant passengers. The food was up to the usual high standard and the drink had the usual high prices (but you know that before you go). I have seen complaints about waiting times for ‘Select’ dining but we never had as much as two minutes to wait.
Shore arrangements.
The pickup and departure at Newark were the only low points. The organisation was poor and we were delayed. However, we made Celebrity aware of this and were generously compensated for our next cruise which, without hesitation, is also with Celebrity. We had doubts about the Sheraton Hotel in Newark as some of the reviews in TripAdvisor were poor. However, it was of a high standard and we had two good meals there.
Naturewatch.
Little to report other than a few seals and dolphins. BUT, the ship was accompanied for the last three days by a Peregrine Falcon which circled us: always in a clockwise direction all the way from Nova Scotia to New York.
