CELEBRITY SUMMIT ex Puerto Rico 20th Feb 2010.

I will not mention the long flight as this was a long journey from Manchester and cannot blame anyone else for the inconvenience.

Now to the Cruise. When we arrived at San Juan Puerto Rico we were met at the airport and taken to the Caribe Hilton for an overnight stay. This was a most acceptable interval before having to wait in the heat, outside the 'shed' and inside on plastic chairs to obtain our Sea Passes and register our Credit/Debit Cards before boarding the Summit. I was surprised, to encounter stewards who made no effort to accompany us to our Stateroom. However, we knew our way around this Millenium Class ship and found our abode quickly.

The Stateroom Steward we had was most friendly, something I will come to later.

Perplexed, when entering the self service area on Deck 10, the beverages (tea, coffee and soft drinks) being roped off and the beverage and food section being manned and served by attentive dining room staff, I thought there might have been a problem on a past cruise. Enquiries revealed that indeed, another vessel had problems with H1 N1 and all the ships of this line had been instructed to carry out a safety proceedure. I congratulate the Management on this attitude. It lasted for what I deem a quarantine period of some four days, when the beverages became available on demand. The food section stayed in the control of the staff.

We never ate in the Speciality Restaurant so I make no comment on that.

The food in the Main Restaurant was of good quality, served with impeccable accuracy and demeanour. The Waiters had the customer first attitude and protocol of serving the ladies first was always maintained.

Our Stateroom, as all cabins are called, was of good size on Deck 8 with adequate wardrobe and drawer space for two people. The Steward, as I mentioned earlier, was most meticulous and always greeted us with our names. With the number of rooms under his juristiction, I thought this a very personal bond.

We did not take organised excursions, not because they were expensive but because we usually make our own way with taxis or other conveyances. However, there were so many trips available, it would have been hard to choose! We have been to the Caribbean three times before this trip so you will understand our attitude.

The entertainment pleased most of the passengers; I listen to the talk on ships! Entertainment is always something personal and the variety acts, brought in from other ships was good. Perhaps the orchestra was a little loud for the xylophone wizard on occasions. His energetic act might have compensated for the good food he ate!
As one of our party had an intolerance to cheese, the Maitre D always went through the Menu for the next day.

Now, our table guests.

We prefer to sit at at table with four or six other people, giving us an opportunity to echange in conversation with people from other Countries about all and sundry, bringing so much colour to the conversation. This was achieved! Our conversations revealed so much about life in other Countries with truth and understanding.

There were so many activities on board, it would be hard to become bored. After all, after we left San Juan in misty conditions, the sun was so very kind to us. Travelling from the UK, for us, always leads us to a 'Back to Back' meaning that there is a further 7 days of enjoyment. The lengthy flights need to be compensated by something acceptable so, we always make it a two week holiday.

I know our table guests are waiting for this story; I hope you all agree that we had some good conversations and that others, who will be cruising aboard Summit in the future, will enjoy the experience, maybe for the first time, enjoying conversation, exchanging views and generally being good company. Always accept that strangers who meet have opinions sometimes alien to your own, though we didn't encounter that.

Carry on Cruising folks! What better hotel will you find for the money, with entertainment included every night, a pub wherever you want it and company the like you will never find at your 'local'?
Quality of Food5
We ate in the Waterfall on Deck 10 for breakfast & lunchand in the Cosmopolitan for Dinner. The food was very good with stakes and all other dishes to utter satisfaction.
Entertainment5
All the entertainment was good. Particular mention of the xzylophone player is warranted.
Shore Excursions5
No planned excursions taken.
Staff5
Our Stateroom Stewad Narcisso, for his most meticulous attention to detail and specifically for his salutations at every meeting.
Children's Facilitiesn/a
Onboard Activities5
Huge amount of activities available, vcatering for most passengers. I found the 'Baggo' game very fruitful!
Cabins5
Our Stateroom or Cabin was well appointed, kept very neatly by our Steward - and us of course!

We sailed from San Juan 22 Feb, in beautiful weather, on Millenium. After a few days we found out that our ship had the novovirus. After reading some reviews it would seem that our ship had previously had this problem. We know of many people who were affected with the virus. We went with another couple and one of them was 'off colour' after about two days onboard. He ate and drank little and did not take the sun and was OK after about 2 days. On reflection he may have had this virus, but at the time there was no mention of it. The ship took every precaution possible and we had all the restrictions mentioned in this review; no self service anywhere. Everything was handed to us by the staff. This slowed things down a little and they had to learn not to put the tea bag in with the hot water AND MILK, at the same time It is very unfortunate for the ones who contracted the virus as some felt quite poorly, but they all recommended a visit to the medical dept ASAP. The quicker they got the medication, the sooner they recovered. Since returning, we hear of at least 2 hospitals that are affected with this virus in the UK, so it would now deter us from cruising again. Apart from our disappointment with some of the entertainment, we had a super cruise. We were on Constellation June 2009, which we consider was just slightly better overall than Millenium. We have sailed on Century and Galaxy. Also we have been on Equinox. Although the new ships are magnificent in appearance, we prefer the 'Millenium' class ships for many reasons. We prefer the staterooms and we found the public areas very dim at night.

Thanks for this well-written and interesting review. I love the Summit and she's clearly still delivering the goods!

Thank you for your comment Bosscat. I always tell it as it is, when writing my impression of a cruise. Look out for another, possibly about the Panama Canal aboard a vessel still to be identified!
