CELEBRITY SUMMIT ex Puerto Rico 20th Feb 2010.
I will not mention the long flight as this was a long journey from Manchester and cannot blame anyone else for the inconvenience.
Now to the Cruise. When we arrived at San Juan Puerto Rico we were met at the airport and taken to the Caribe Hilton for an overnight stay. This was a most acceptable interval before having to wait in the heat, outside the 'shed' and inside on plastic chairs to obtain our Sea Passes and register our Credit/Debit Cards before boarding the Summit. I was surprised, to encounter stewards who made no effort to accompany us to our Stateroom. However, we knew our way around this Millenium Class ship and found our abode quickly.
The Stateroom Steward we had was most friendly, something I will come to later.
Perplexed, when entering the self service area on Deck 10, the beverages (tea, coffee and soft drinks) being roped off and the beverage and food section being manned and served by attentive dining room staff, I thought there might have been a problem on a past cruise. Enquiries revealed that indeed, another vessel had problems with H1 N1 and all the ships of this line had been instructed to carry out a safety proceedure. I congratulate the Management on this attitude. It lasted for what I deem a quarantine period of some four days, when the beverages became available on demand. The food section stayed in the control of the staff.
We never ate in the Speciality Restaurant so I make no comment on that.
The food in the Main Restaurant was of good quality, served with impeccable accuracy and demeanour. The Waiters had the customer first attitude and protocol of serving the ladies first was always maintained.
Our Stateroom, as all cabins are called, was of good size on Deck 8 with adequate wardrobe and drawer space for two people. The Steward, as I mentioned earlier, was most meticulous and always greeted us with our names. With the number of rooms under his juristiction, I thought this a very personal bond.
We did not take organised excursions, not because they were expensive but because we usually make our own way with taxis or other conveyances. However, there were so many trips available, it would have been hard to choose! We have been to the Caribbean three times before this trip so you will understand our attitude.
The entertainment pleased most of the passengers; I listen to the talk on ships! Entertainment is always something personal and the variety acts, brought in from other ships was good. Perhaps the orchestra was a little loud for the xylophone wizard on occasions. His energetic act might have compensated for the good food he ate!
As one of our party had an intolerance to cheese, the Maitre D always went through the Menu for the next day.
Now, our table guests.
We prefer to sit at at table with four or six other people, giving us an opportunity to echange in conversation with people from other Countries about all and sundry, bringing so much colour to the conversation. This was achieved! Our conversations revealed so much about life in other Countries with truth and understanding.
There were so many activities on board, it would be hard to become bored. After all, after we left San Juan in misty conditions, the sun was so very kind to us. Travelling from the UK, for us, always leads us to a 'Back to Back' meaning that there is a further 7 days of enjoyment. The lengthy flights need to be compensated by something acceptable so, we always make it a two week holiday.
I know our table guests are waiting for this story; I hope you all agree that we had some good conversations and that others, who will be cruising aboard Summit in the future, will enjoy the experience, maybe for the first time, enjoying conversation, exchanging views and generally being good company. Always accept that strangers who meet have opinions sometimes alien to your own, though we didn't encounter that.
Carry on Cruising folks! What better hotel will you find for the money, with entertainment included every night, a pub wherever you want it and company the like you will never find at your 'local'?
