My husband & I have just returned from cruising in the Caribbean on Celebrity Millenium. When we booked this we were not aware there were no direct flights to San Juan in Puerto Rico and were quite exhausted by the time we arrived. I think this should be mentioned to you at the time of booking or put in the brochure, we also had to wait two hours for our luggage at the Hilton Hotel in San Juan where we were staying the night. We flew via Miami and I have never been to an airport with such rude and unhelpful people who dare to put up a poster saying "Welcome to the United States of America." In America you have to collect your luggage it can't be put straight to your final destination as it was coming home. No one would help us to find out where we had to take it to be scanned. The Hotel was superb and we were collected next day as arranged and taken to the ship.
The previous week they had Novo Virus on the ship so we were a little longer boarding but everything had been thoroughly cleaned and we had no problems. They handled it superbly. The cruise was first class and the food was to die for I would recommend a diet beforehand if you are going on this ship. We treated ourselves to the Olympic Restaurant which although extra was Michelin Star standard you were treated very special. We were in Concierge Class and the cabin was excellent and I thought the extras you got were well worth it especially the select dining. Being able to go
when we wanted was much better than fixed. Our cabin steward was excellent and kept everything very neat and tidy.
We visited some lovely Islands our favourites being St Maarten Aruba & Curacao, we only went on one excursion but it was very well organised, the rest of the time we did our own thing. Entertainment on board was good particularly the resident dancers, we also saw a good Comedian/Singer from Wales and an excellent Italien pianist. The Broadway show done by the resident dancers was a particular highlight.
I would say my only complaint was the price of the drinks much more expensive than other cruise lines we have been on.

Hi, can you please tell me where in the UK did you fly from? Did you fly from UK to Miami then to Puerto Rico and the same coming back? when talking to the sales rep, he made it sound like its just ONE DIRECT flight?? Thanks for the heads up
Answer by Kingston, Bristol (19 Mar 10 14:23) to a QUESTION by Masoeu (18 Mar 10 19:46)
When we sailed from San Juan it was LHR-Miami-San Juan on the way and SJU- New York- LHR on the way back. I personally preferred the 2 mid length flights to one long and one short BUT if you are going in the winter I would recommend choosing Miami, as the other options are at risk of disruption in bad weather. It's a fabulous place to sail from but it is a tiring journey!

We are going to San Juan in May to pick up our cruise ship and as been said there are no direct flights from the UK you either choose to go to New York and catch another flight or Miami we choose Miami as we have been there several times and found it to be okay there are also other destinations to choose from. We arranged our own flights through British Airways form LHR as it is much cheaper even with two overnights and are staying in a hotel overnight in San Juan and as we have been in San Juan before that will refresh us for some retail therapy before we pick up the ship as it does not sail until the afternoon it is a great place to lighten the credit card many designer shops at 1/2 the price of Miami. I am surprised that no one told you that it was 2 flights. Enjoy your cruise.

We flew from LHR but it doesn\'t matter which airport you go from there are no non stop flights to San Juan that I am aware of. Perhaps breaking the journey in Miami would be better. The only problem we had, Celebrity booked us on a 6am flight to San Juan and left us sitting in the baggage hall without as much as a drink, for about 3 hours as we were too early for the ship.

Flying to San Jaun is long. I had a bad experience on a miami cruise departure and since then have booked my own flights and the cruise separately as you are then in control. I flew from Manchester with Delta via Atlanta - this was the shortest overall journey time. I booked hotel for the night brfore and just used taxis from airport to hotel, to the ship and back to the airport. Fares are fixed at about 20 dollars. No problems with bags etc as a consequence. Takes a bit of courage first time but worth the effort - you learn as you do more cruises. The other advantage I found was that I could bolt on a break - flew to Las Vegas for 5 days - the flight cost was only £30 extra compared to going home after the cruise. I agree with all comments about the fall in standards - had two previous Celebrity cruises to compare with - am now looking for an alternate
