This cruise was our first time on Celebrity. We had used several of the more upmarket cruise lines before, and read good reviews about Celebrity, so we wanted to try them.

The start was good, with the condition of the ship, its general spacious air (they make very good use of mirrors to enlarge the views), the welcome from our cabin steward and the size and state of the cabin. Unfortunately it went downhill from there.

The ship had had some sort of public health problem, finally admitted to us by one of the entertainment staff as a "Code Red". It meant that many of those acting in junior positions such as serving in the open restaurant were not the regular staff, and could barely speak or even understand English. That was not a problem specific to our English accents as many of the North American passengers complained of the same problem. Because of the health scare no passenger was allowed to touch any food or associated items - we even had to ask for individual packets of pepper and salt. As you may imagine, these two situations together made service in the restaurants extremely slow. There were similar problems in other areas, although the few instances where work was by apparently regular and experienced staff, such as our cabin steward, showed up well.

The senior staff made no attempt to explain what was going on to passengers, and generally seemd very insensitive to our needs. Another example was the situation on port days. Twice we were faced with a 20 minute + queue to get off the ship. On both accasions very elderly passengers had to hobble on their sticks or frames in a line snaking back and forward through the casino, with no-one trying to help or even offer seating. This could easily have been prevented by having a second scanner at the gangeway - when I suggested this to the lady in cherge on the queue I was met with "nothing to do with me". Sadly this attittude by many of the staff was our prime memory of the cruise, and suggested it was not a happy ship.

It could and should have been an excellent cruise if the ship was actively managed, as it was it put Celebrity to the bottom of our list for future cruises.
Quality of Food1
Food in the "self service" (see my main review) was not good, the second poorest we had had in 9 cruises. Food in the formal restuarant was just about acceptable.
Entertainment3
A mainly dance spectacular was excellent, other entertianment including a comedian was average.
Shore Excursions3
The trip to an island community off Icy Point.
Staff2
The nature series lecturer - he told us when and where to go watching and we saw 2 pods on Orcas, on schedule, as we cruised the inner passage.
