Enjoyable Mediterranean Cruise

Reviewed By: on
My wife and I greatly enjoyed this Mediterranean cruise departing from Venice and returning to Rome. We have been on several cruises covering the itinerary but chose this one because several of the stop-overs were new to us, specifically Koper (Slovenia), Ravenna and Bari (Italy), Split and Dubrovnic (Croatia) and Kotor (Montenegro). We did not venture away from the port towns, preferring to do our own thing in them. mainly seeing the principal sites and just soaking up the atmosphere - it worked out well for us, although others would obviously prefer to go on organised trips.

The Silhouette was our third Solstice class ship and suits us perfectly. We are quite happy with the large number of people and size of the ship and the big tonnage is a plus in choppy seas (one of us is not a good sailor). The cabin we had on deck 6 was very spacious and comfortable and, although the balcony view was slightly obstructed, it was still very enjoyable. Our cabin stewards were very attentive.

We chose the Select dining option under which we had flexibility on dinner timing. This involved waiting to be seated (up to 20 minutes) and a different table every night. With hindsight, we would have preferred to get to know our dinner companions - we like large tables - always assuming the ones on a fixed table are pleasant people! Also, we missed developing a bond with the waiters, sitting at a different table every night although the service was generally very good. The food was excellent, so we did not use the speciality restaurants.

The activities on offer were quite extensive, including useful talks on the various ports of call. One criticism, though, we enjoy playing bridge and the card room provided is totally inadequate for this purpose - it is open for other card and board games, some very noisy!

On entertainment, the usual variety of soloists playing in different locations provided pleasant musical background, with or without a drink. The Halloween celebration in the Atrium was excellent. The shows in the theatre were varied, some of the acts were mediocre but the three involving the full singing and dancing troupe were very good.

In addition to the above, shopping at sea always attracts plenty of passengers, with bargain specials to suit many tastes. And then there is always the casino to help reduce the weight of the wallet although, on this cruise, they had a few worthwhile spot prizes at the casino.

Embarkation and disembarkation arrangements were handled very professionally. One negative comment, wifi is chargeable (you get a reasonable free allocation of minutes only after several previous cruises with Celebrity).

To sum up, a very enjoyable cruise and we remain loyal to the Celebrity brand.
