Celebrity Eclipse March 2013

Reviewed By: on
This was a 14 night cruise on Celebrity Eclipse embarking from Fort Lauderdale into the Southern Caribbean among some of the ports were Aruba, Grenada, St Thomas and St Maarten. There were five sea days which included the first and last two days of the cruise.
Eclipse is the third member of Celebrity Solstice Class ships. For a large ship which takes around 2800 guests the lay out is very logical and after a couple of days finding your way around the ship is fairly easy, signposting around the ship is helpful and there are adequate numbers of elevators for those who do not wish to tackle the stairs.
Highlights of the ship are the large lawn area where the hot glass show is held on a regular basis during the cruise and a large gym in the spa area. For those in Aqua Class staterooms the Persian Garden is a complimentary spa area with heated tiled beds and steam and dry heat room. It is possible to pay for entrance for guests in non Aquaclass staterooms. There are two outdoor pools and one inside pool in the covered adults only spa area. Both pools have close by hot tubs.
Entertainment was adequate for the fourteen days, there were three full production shows which were very professional and entertaining, I felt that on a cruise of this length there should have been another full production show. On other evenings there was the usual cruise entertainment of singer, comedian, juggler, magician. On most nights those on late sitting had an early show at 7:00 and those on early sitting at 9:00. Being on late sitting I do not like this arrangement and far prefer to go to a show after the meal. Celebrity do put on speakers and quizzes which were well attended on sea days. I enjoyed a couple of instructive talks by the Apple Computer expert who ran the computer room. There were also talks by the spa staff who ultimately were wanting too sell services and products.

I did not go to any of the three premium dining venues, I felt that the price was high and was quite happy with the food quality and service in the main dining room.
For breakfast and lunch the buffet had a very good variety of foods, I think that most tastes are well catered for, for healthier lighter meals the small Aquaspa food area is open for breakfast and lunch, on deck 5 Caffe el Baccio has complimentary pastries all day and bistro on five serves pancakes and paninis all day for a small charge. The buffet is open in the evening for those not wishing to eat in the more formal venues.

The standard balcony room I had was very comfortable, I found the bed good and the bathroom with shower was an adequate size with plenty of cupboard space for bathroom items. Drawer space was limited in the main room but there are two large storage areas above the bed, they are a little inaccessible for some to use.
For those wanting to try a special cocktail the Molecular Bar serves unique alcoholic drinks, the bartender here is specially trained to dispense these wonderful concoctions. More popular is the Martini Bar with its ice counter, some of the bartenders here put on a splendid show of mixing cocktails.
I would sail with Celebrity again and I would recommend them to others. Their ships offer a product more suited to those not wanting a fun packed noisy party cruise, they offer a more sophisticated product with good service and quality at the large ship premium portion of the cruise market. Families are well looked after with kids clubs when youngsters are on board, this particular March cruise was in term time and there were only a handful of very small children to be seen.
Friendliness and service from all the staff was very good and interaction with the Officers was also good.

We may have been on the same cruise. I agree with your comments about drawer space. This time, being three of us, we were in an S1 Suite. Very good. It also gave us complimentary speciality dining. My wife and I were on Eclipse in October to the Canary's and we felt the Tuscan Grill was the better by a short head to Mirano's. So this trip we first tried Tuscan grill and it was poor. Fillet Mignon very tender but without any taste. We didin't bother with the other Speciality Restuarants after that

I did the same cruise end of January and just wanted to know if Perry Grant was still performing in the Sky Lounge every night. We have been on the Eclipse a few times before but we felt this spoilt the cruise as the entertaiment which would usually be in the Sky Lounge such as dancing to a live band and the interactive parties etc were held in the Atrium which was far too small an area with inadequate seating. I see from your review they have changed the cruise director and I hope he has found Perry a new venue!!

Hi Perry was still in the skylounge and pulling in the crowds. He also did an evening stage show in the theatre one evening for both sittings. The cruise director was the British Sue Denning who gets good reviews from Celebrity cruisers.
