|Cruise Line: Celebrity Cruises||Times cruised before: 6-10|
|Cruise Ship: Celebrity Eclipse||Sailed: February, 2013|
|Destination: Caribbean||Age: 56-65|
We have just returned from a 2 week Caribbean cruise with Celebrity Eclipse and it was the best cruise I have ever been on. I just cannot understand the negative comments about this ship! Were they on the same ship as us? Perhaps, as someone wrote, it's "horses for courses" and perhaps they were just on the wrong ship. My husband and I enjoy American based entertainment (though it was mixed entertainment - we didn't quite "get" the Canadian comedian but no problem, there was other quality stuff) and the mix of American and Canadian guests as well as other nationalities and we like the fact the ship is not overrun by noisy teenagers. The ship is beautiful, modern and bright. We even preferred the Eclipse to Cunard (QM and QE), probably as we are both travellers of the world and quite gregarious people.
From start to finish this trip was fabulous. Well maybe not finish as the hour long queue to get through Customs was horrendous.
I cannot understand why some people are complaining about the staff. Every member of staff we came across were friendly and accommodating and bent over backwards to ensure our needs were met. These youngsters worked so damn hard and deserve some credit. They were all lovely.
We were in a Concierge Class cabin on the 10th floor. The room was sufficiently spacious with sufficient storage. I missed having a bath tub but I should tell you we have already booked to go back on the Eclipse same time next year - we have booked a Celebrity suite next time which comes with a bath.
The Oceanview restaurant was really good and with an ample selection of dishes at all times of the day. We had Select Dining in the Moonlight Sonata restaurant. This was a good choice inasmuch as we could eat when we like. We usually chose to share a table and have made countless new friends. We also bought the Speciality Restaurant package when we boarded for $99 pp. All 3 restaurants were fantastic - the Italian, and the French top class. Qsine was also excellent too -the ordering system was quite unique as well as the way in which the food was presented. I won't spoil it for you.
The Shore Excursions were good - I enjoyed the Butterfly Farm and shopping trip in St. Maarten very much, my husband did snorkeling, and the American Cup in St Maarten. This was our 3rd trip to Antigua though - the first time was bad, the second worse and this time was dreadful - not a nice stop. I wish they would replace it with somewhere else. It probably was okay if you had done a shore excursion here but we just went into the local town which is not pleasant at all and there was a lot of hassling by vendors.
Entertainment - Entertainment Director Sue, an English lady. It was varied and excellent. The show troupe were very edgy and talented.
Perry Grant in the Sky Lounge! What can I say about Perry! This is the 2nd time we have seen him (last time was 2 years ago on the Constellation) He is just so entertaining and funny and we can't go back next year to enjoy him more. Perry is like Marmite - you either like him or you don't We are very much in the first category. The Sky Lounge was packed every night.
There was really enough to do on board, and the weather was mainly great for sunbathing too.
As I said earlier, disembarkation was horrendous. This was not Celebrity's fault. I believe there were 6 cruise ships disembarking at the same time. I can't understand why they didn't have trolleys for people to use as I saw a lot of the older people struggling with their luggage by hand.
But all in all a wonderful holiday.
|Quality of Food|
|We ate in the Moonlight Sonata most nights but tried all 3 speciality restaurants which were exceptional|
|Douglas Cameron the violinist, Jordan Bennett singer, the singers and dancers, Perry Mr Wonderful Grant in the Sky Lounge|
|For my husband it was the America Cup yacht race in St Maarten - for me it was also St Maarten the Butterfly Farm and the shopping. Private excursion in Barbados to Sandy Lane golf club - also Aruba shore excursion to the Aloe Vera Factory etc is worth going on.|
|I cannot single out any particular member of staff. They were all good. Mark, our cabin valet was really helpful. The Serbian girl at the entry to the Moonlight Sonata good too.|
|I have been on ships were there were more activities but many of those, eg bowling, climbing were children and teenager based which we didn't miss (now ours are grown-up!). I wouldn't say there was a huge choice of activities - Cunard has more including interesting talks by well-known academics, actors, writers etc - but there were enough.|
|Yes the cabin was a good size - compact and comfortable bed.|
