Eclipse Baltic Cruise July 2011

Reviewed By: on
Our July 2011 Baltic cruise (our 18th cruise todate) on the Eclipse was our 2nd with Celebrity and most probably our last! The trip was definitely spoilt by the large Spanish & Mexican contingent; who were loud, rude and ignorant throughout the trip. To summarise briefly: -
The Good:
The ship is fine and has potential to be a great cruise ship, plenty of open spaces. The glass blowing is a novelty, but does anyone go to more than one show?
The staff were GREAT, friendly and professional (although a few of the Eastern European staff were a little surly!).
The food was fine a little “nouvelle cuisine”, but it was well presented and we had no complaints. Also, as there wasn’t the vegetable overload you can get with other lines (P&O), there was a lot less waste. Didn’t try the alternative restaurants – couldn’t see the point the food didn’t look any better!
The ports were as good as expected (but the cruise line can’t be held responsible if you don’t like a port, it was your choice when you booked!). The tours were well organised, if a little expensive.
Embarkation and dis-embarkation were handled very smoothly, much better than P&O!

The Bad:
The “innovative” design of the cabin simply just doesn’t work! Having bed being near the balcony doors and the HUGE settee in the middle of the cabin is a mistake. There isn’t really enough drawer space, even with the over-bed cupboards (which my wife couldn’t reach without balancing on the bed).
The shower-room is ok and looks very contemporary. But, the sink is a major triumph for style over practicality; the tap is so big it’s difficult to use the sink (almost impossible to have a wet-shave!).
No self-service laundry/ironing room; the stewards will press clothes (at a cost), but I’d be reluctant to send anything more delicate than shirts or suits.
The dress code wan't adherred to, shorts in the dining room & theater on Formal nights!
The entertainment was at best average (verging on poor); the dancers were trying their best, but the choreography was dire and the music tempo too fast; as it was all over the ship, from the use of recorded music through to the live groups & bands (only the jazz group were able to keep to reasonable timing – and I don’t like jazz!). Mike Doyle was his usual self and the other guest entertainers were ok.
Drinks were expensive, $4.50 for a litre of bottled water! Alcoholic drinks started at $5.25 for a small bottle of beer, with wine at about $6.00 for a small glass. We don’t drink much so we paid for each drink, but the most suitable Beverage package for us would have cost $1400.00 for the two week cruise.
The shuttle buses were extortionate at $15.00 each per day (we only used two, Helsinki & Stockholm).
And that’s it, as I say, most likely won’t use Celebrity again, so its’ back to P&O (although they seem to be dumbing down the cruise experience, with the dress code not being upheld). So, it looks like its Cunard next!
Cheers, Paul & Margaret

We agree with most of the comments from Paul and Margaret. Cruised with Princess and RCI before. Had a Sky Suite and room was excellent but no pre dinner freebies as the Suite was not a Suite according to the Management! Good things - Enjoyed speciality restaurants, Bistro on 5 is excellent, as was Tuscan Grille. Main restaurant food seemed bland Entertainment was good Disembarkation - best yet Bad things - Embarkation - chaos getting to room - no-one to show you to room unlike Princess. Trips expensive and return from Brugges due to lack of security management was a disaster - spendinh 50 mins stuck on coach on jetty. Shuttle buses expensive and a rip off - use hop on hop off Trip ticket collection was a nonsense on Brugges day - got better. Agree re Spanish, Mexican lot - very arrogant and loud Drinks package was expensive at $1400 and beware does not include any drinks bought via room service. Outrageous - excuse is lack of staff - real reason is they dont want to allow you to buy too much. Buying by the glass is also a pain. Staff in general were average - agree bar staff were miserable. The seating allocation at dinner (fixed dining) didnt work properly on day 1 - was sorted eventually. Totally agree with lack of dress code comments - great shame that people dont bother to dress properly and even worse the staff dont stop them. As for the crap photos - dont even get me started - $19.95 each - jog on! (to be fair these prices are general on cruise ships) Back to Princess for us - let us hope they havent gone the way of other cruise lines - if they have - no more cruises for us. Keith & Viv

Was on the same cruise and I think these comments were spot on! Had an Aqua Cabin on deck 11 which I did a review on, we won't be using Celebrity again, and I agree absolutely with her comments regarding P and O, wish they would address the 'dress code' policy which is about the same as Celebrity and also stop making it so cheap that 'football shirts' can afford to cruise!

The food in the speciality restaurants on Celebrity is in a different league, and worth every cent. We ate there every night on our last cruise!

I find your review hard to believe, i was on this ship in June and there wasn't anything that i found to complain about, our balcony cabin was wonderful, (we had a sofa next to the balcony), the bathroom was the best i'd ever had, and why there wasn't enough space for your clothes i don't know, all i can think is you must have taken alot of cases. We ate in the mdr and every night the food was great.I do agree with the expensive drinks, but we were aware of this, i always do my homework before a cruise so we were aware of prices, if you have only sailed with P&O one gets spoilt as they are very cheap, afterall this is a five star ship, and if you compare this to a four star you should expect to pay more. I gave this ship five stars for my overall rating and i am hoping to sail on her again.

Totally agree, for someone who has sailed with Celebrity before, you know what the drink prices are and the shuttles are charged for. With a bit of homework, we have just come off Eclipse and got off at every port but Livorno (where you don't have a choice) and didn't use one shuttle. I also like cunard, the shuttles are included, but overall more expensive. As for the storage space, well 4 of us with 6 bags/cases go into a balcony quite well when you are organised.....

You are right the cases do fit under the bed, if you read the report the gripe is lack of drawer space. The wardrobe was fine however one cannot hang T shirts and shorts in it. We have cruised many times and are perfectly well organised and as the clothes we use are only reserved for our cruises one can safely say they have fitted into other cabin drawers and for longer vacations.

How does a range of ratings that includes two fives, one four, one three and two two's equate to an overall grade of one?

I see what you mean, but the rating of one star was for the overall cruise experience, in my personal opinion. The ship was ok, the staff & food were good and the ports as expected. But, taking all this into account and balancing it against the class of ship, the total cost of the cruise and experience of other cruises and cruise lines, it was an unsatisfactory holiday! Sorry.

Couldn't agree more about the behaviour of some of the passengers on this ship. It spoilt our holiday. We had two adjoining cabins and the neighbours on both sides were appalling. We have never experienced anything like it in all the years we have been on cruise holidays. We were woken at all hours of the night/early morning and there was constant noise, thumping, banging of doors throughout the day. I came home tired out rather than relaxed and refreshed. Celebrity's reaction to numerous complaints was weak. I will write a review when I have time but suffice to say Celebrity can target new markets (Spain, Mexico and Oman on this particular cruise) for ex-Southampton sailings all it likes but I won't be onboard. Very disappointed as until now Celebrity was our preferred cruise line.

Interesting thought to exclude a cruise line because of passenger behaviour! To that end we would never go P&O again because of fighting!, Princess for hoards of unruly childen, Cunard for making some people feel lower class and RC for drunken bored teenagers. Move on - these ships are huge and full of people, I agree it is annoying when your neighbours are inconciderate and the staff do nothing but until passengers are screened for suitability to mix - deal with it by being prepared. We have been on Eclipse twice in the last year and naturally it was different each time but not Celebritys fault.
