It targets a certain type of passenger and hits the bull's eye!
Azamara are undoubtedly achieving their aim in catering for a specific group of clients. The small size of ship (30277 tons) makes for a more intimate experience than on those which cater for thousands of passengers. The vast majority of people were couples of retirement age seeking the good value that a repositioning cruise offers in luxurious surroundings and visiting ports of call that are different from the normal run-of-the-mill destinations. A major advantage of the comparatively small numbers of passengers was that queues to leave the ship for port excursions were nothing like as long as may be found with other companies.
As other people have written, the service on board is outstanding. It is hard to imagine how any ship's captain could have been more ubiquitous and the strong feeling of identity with the ship that this engendered amongst passengers was remarkable.
The quality and variety of food on offer was exceptional. There was none of the feeling, sadly found on many other ships nowadays, that the menus had been decided months in advance by head office and applied to every ship in the fleet regardless of where it was in the world.
Make sure that they charge your bill to your credit card in US dollars. If you let them make the conversion into pounds sterling they will use a rate of exchange which is less than advantageous to you.
If you like sophistication in your holidays, this is the ship for you.
