Ventura to undergo changes due to “challenges”

After considering customer feedback P&O cruises have decided to make changes to their £300 million ship, Ventura after the cruiseline has admitted to facing “challenges” in her inaugural season.

The changes will include alternations to its dining, while the company will look at the complaints over the lack of sun loungers.

Nigel Esdale, P&O cruises director said: “In general newcomers have reacted very favourably to Ventura and we continue to see this as our primary focus.

“That said, we have had some challenges in marrying the differing needs and expectations of a new audience with those who have travelled with us many times before.

“Indeed the first year of operation for any ship is always its most difficult and the team on board have worked extremely hard to consistently deliver against our passengers' expectations.”

Esdale conceded that the ship had experienced “particularly heavy demand” for Freedom Dining at peak times, especially during the summer school holidays.

“In order to realise this concept to the full, and thereby ensure that it does indeed offer customers the flexibility that they desire, we have increased the number of tables within the Cinnamon Restaurant and will be introducing specialist software to enable the team to effectively manage the utilisation of the range of restaurants around the ship,” he said.

“More significantly though, passengers will no longer need to book a table in advance. Instead they can enjoy the ultimate freedom of arriving at the time they would like to dine and, where possible, they will be seated immediately.

“This is the system that we operate on board Oceana with great success.”

The entertainment programme will also be improved to offer increased choice and flexibility at a range of different times, to help reduce ‘peak time’ demand.

In the casual dining areas the standard of presentation will also be enhanced.

The Beach House, which is the family orientated restaurant will be able to offer an additional informal dining venue with waiter service.

Esdale has acknowledged that the availability on the sunloungers “has been an issue” during some of the summer school holiday cruises.

“In order to address this we have decided to devote some of the space originally allocated to Cirque Ventura on Deck 19 as an additional sunbathing area,” he said. “This will give those passengers who like to spend some time relaxing in the sun more space to do so.

“We will retain the bungee trampolines which have been a real hit with passengers aged from 8 to 84. And we will continue to offer the Cirque Ventura circus skills school teaching the art of juggling, tightrope and stilt walking.”

New furniture, including a reclining chair, will be introduced to cabin balconies in next spring.

“This will have the added advantage of helping to alleviate the high demand for loungers on the open deck, which we experienced during the summer school holidays,” added Esdale.

The ship will be using a new terminal at Southampton next year.

Esdale added that “the sheer number of people boarding this vessel has inevitably meant a greater requirement for car parking.

“This has been at the forefront of our minds when planning for the brand new cruise terminal currently under construction and, as a result, the new terminal will be better able to accommodate such demands when it enters use next year.”

I still think that they should have smoking balconies on one side of the ship and no-smoking on the other sideon ALL ships. We went on the Ventura in the summer, COULD NOT use the balcony because the passengers on the left and below us were smoking on their balconies continuosly. What a waste of our money for paying extra to have a balcony yet it was spoilt by smokers!

What ever changes P&O do to the Ventura next year I personally think due to the recession that they may have difficulty filing the vessel with passengers. P&O marketed this ship as being for families but unfortunately the very people that they wish to attract on board are the very group (Families and younger couples) that appear to be foregoing holidays due to the recession. According to the many negative reviews of this ship from the older generation, it is unlikely that P&O will be able to fill the gap from these passengers. With the demise of Ocean Village over the next two years I just wonder if Carnival's long term strategy is the hope that holidaymakers from OV will transfer their allegiance to the Ventura.

What have they done to stop smoking on balconies ruining the comfort of adjacent balcony clients who have paid ££££ extra for the pleasure of sitting on a balcony in uncontaminated air without breathing in other people's second hand smoke?

I am a non-smoker / reformed smoker but I cannot find it in myself to criticise those who wish to smoke on their own balconies! I travel regularly with my husband who smokes and find this is far more preferable to being sat in an enclosed space with 50+ peoples smoke. You are outdoors and generally the air is moving around you ~ It doesn't cause that much discomfort. Also these people have also paid ££££ to have a balcony cabin.

The only thing wrong with Ventura is her class of ship she was designed to have eleven, passenger using decks, she is the same class as Grand Princess, but Carnival decided to put in an extra passenger deck, therefore 400+ passengers, so the theatre and every other facility on board, is to small for the extra passengers, the only thing larger on board, is Carnivals profits, from the extra customers. there is an old saying, cram them in and stack them high, they are certainly doing that.

Having booked our 2009 cruise on Ventura before we had sailed on her in August of this year our first feelings where to get back home and cancel 2009 cruise but after talking and coming to the conclusion that P&O woluld most probably iron out the probs of the maiden season by the time we sailed again i think that their changes are missing one thing they need to extend the parental sign in and out to the kids club for the 9-12 at the moment like their other ships kids of this age can come and go as they please leaving them to roam around on their own at any time this may work on their smaller ships but as ventura is attracting more familes and carries more kids this would make good sense and make the ship a safer and more pleasant holiday for all passengers we have used P&O since our daughter was 2 and have always had nothing but praise for the kids clubs but i think that the 9-12 age group need to have a more formal/structured arrangment if we ask our daughter to stay there she will but like most kids if she makes friends with others who can come and go as the please she will run the risk of being left out

For goodness sake why wait until next year we are going on Ventura in December and have just got all those problems to look forward to, People who have been on it say it is like Butlins on Sea. the Captain lets youngesters run amok around the Pool where people want to lie and rest he just looks on ignoring them . So replace the Captain as well. Another Ship put a couple off the ship for trouble they caused why cant Ventura's Captain do that too. Get Rid of him he just wants a Cushy job without the responsibility of what the passengers think.

We have just returned from Ventura - Spirit of the Caribbean - and enjoyed every minute. She is a great ship. Yes, there are a few problems, not least the Sun Loungers, too many in too confined a space. Would probably have been arrested if I had lain so close to a stranger on a beach in the UK. Sardines have space compared being on a Sun Lounger on Ventura? Yes, children enjoy the swimming pools, and appear to take over but, my wife likes to swim and had no problems with the youngters, nor did they misbehave, unless we were just lucky? We will sail on her again without doubt and suggest others try the ship for themselves. We decided we would enjoy our holiday, in spite of the negative comments we had read on this site about the ship before sailing, and we did just that.

poor old captain ! seems like he's responsible for everything including passengers children. Surely thats the parents job ? Seems like a decent chap to me & ventura I hope will turn out to be a pretty decent trip once certain issues are addressed. It seems to me as though P & O have been trying to access a relativley new corner of the market which is clearly not suitable for some of the veteran cruisers. Interesting item in the news yesterday about how intolerent of children we are in this country, some of the reviews on this website may support this perhaps?

Yes it is true that its up to parents to make sure they dont ruin other people's holidays by running amok, but as the Captain is in charge of the ship it is up to him to make sure that the passengers are having a good time and keeping an eye on everything not just making sure he is having an easy life. I am not a veteran cruiser this willbe the first cruise I have been on and with the amount of bad reveiws Ventura has got its about time something was done not in 6 months time. Kids dont bother me at all unless they spoil things for other people by misbehaving.
