QE2 gets a paint job but loses her identity

The Legendary QE2 was transferred into Dubai’s dry docks last month where a number of routine marine surveys to confirm her compliance with international standards and specifications were conducted.

As part of the process, the ship’s underwater hull was shot blasted and repainted. Her main dark grey hull, white sides, and iconic red and black funnel also received a fresh coat of paint and her propellers were polished.

Internal works included an overhaul of her air conditioning and plumbing systems.

QE2 is still at Drydocks World-Dubai to allow the remainder of her survey work to be completed.

According to the BBC, the name 'Southampton' has now been removed too.

A spokesman for Nakheel said: "Although she will no longer be taking passengers or operating as a cruise ship, the registration documents will state her class as being 'a passenger/cruise ship'.

"To conform to international law, the name 'Southampton' has been painted over on the stern, although the letters remain attached, and her temporary home port of Port Vila has now been painted underneath.

"To comply with the terms of the sale contract, the Cunard brand has also been removed from the side of the ship."

With thanks to BBC News and Nakheel for the above information.

As a Q E 2 cruiser, sad news.

It is a pity this great ship was not purchased by someone like Richard Branson and kept in the country where she is truly appreciated. She would make a superb addition to Southampton as a pre cruise hotel.

I have just sat here and read all the comments.....no matter what anyone feels you cannot take away the memories. Cunard did what they did for all the right reasons, to them, and, with great respect she was a tired 'old lady' for todays cruisers. I was lucky enough to have experienced her last voyage......as my honeymoon last Nov, and also as my 1st cruise. I loved every minute of the trip, as did my husband. Refined elegance, dressing for dinner etc, can't be faulted in our book, but not what everyone wants. We came home from NY on the QM2, and are booked on the QV for May in 2010. QM2 takes too many passengers for our liking. We await our trip on QV with interest. Oh and we are not 'old', I am 55 and my husband 50.

At least they are still spending money on the ship and keeping it looking good presumably. How long will it be in Capetown ? I agree with other readers it belongs in Southampton as an attraction and a symbol of Britain's maritime heritage. It should form the centrepiece of a new Southampton Maritime Museum / Marine Centre / Marina / Cruise Terminal instead of that ridiculous little ex-Wool House building. In its 40 year career QE2 has meant a lot to an enormous number of people celebrating anniversaries, birthdays and other very special events.

What about the place where she was built? We remember what happened when The Britannia "slipped her mooring" and landed 50 miles east of where she should have been! Blair, Glasgow

I was sorry to see the old girl depart these shores for the last time. I was employed as a painter by John Brown Shipyard and worked on her Majesty during the last couple of months at the yard. Luck was on my side and I was asked to go on her trials from Greenock down the Firth of Clyde and the measured mile.Guess what my luck held and I was also asked to go on her maiden voyage in my capacity as a painter. We were at sea over Xmas and New year the only reason I was asked to go . I always hoped to go on a QE2 Cruise but unfortunately. she was retired before I accomplished my Dream, At least. even although I did not fulfil that Dream I still have my memories of this great ship, We were supposed tio be going to Dakar, West Africa. but because of the Turbine trouble we reached the Canaries, picked up some Cunard Officials and about-turned for Southhampton on half-speed, Seeing your article on my PC asking for comments I thought you might like to hear my little story. From a Lifetime Admirer of the QE2 Mr. J. H. French

what a shame. There are so many different comments on the way this ship has been sold and got rid of. Yes it is only a ship but she was so well known for her splendor. Not like the new ships of today where you don't get to meet people more than once as they are so big. I for one thought she was elegant when she was first birthed in Gibralter 1969 where i lived at the time and when i sailed on her and she took me back there. I also saw her in Dubai in April she needed a coat of paint but yes the funnel was still in use to keep the lighting etc going. Sorry to see her go like this.

QE2 should be berthed in the Thames adjacent to the Houses of Parliament so that all members of parliament can be accomodated without the need for them to aquire a second home in the City.

I don't think the river is deep enough for her there and besides we want her in Southampton, her home port ......Neil
