Benefits cheat caught after boasts of luxury cruise on Facebook

A COVENTRY man who boasted of his holidays, properties and businesses on Facebook has been ordered to pay back more than £20,000 after being caught swindling thousands of pounds out of Coventry City Council.

Jonathan McGrory, of Nuffield Road, Courthouse Green, was snared by the city council’s benefit fraud team after falsely claiming housing and council tax benefit while secretly enjoying a “luxurious” lifestyle over a three-year period.

The team began investigating the 39-year-old after receiving an anonymous tip-off, claiming he owned a property he was claiming rent for.

In an interview under caution he admitted to officers he did own the property and also a second property, which he also rented out.

He told them he couldn’t afford to live in the houses he owned so stayed in the house he rented himself and got benefit for it.

However investigators found he lived a more luxurious lifestyle than he let on and had recently been enjoyed a cruise costing £4,000.

He had also posted on Facebook and Friends Reunited that he owned several properties and businesses.

In total McGory had been overpayed £11,106.48 in housing benefit and £1,348.26 in council tax benefit between August 2004 and June 2007.

In April this year he pleaded guilty to four offences of making false statements, failing to declare he owned two properties for which he was receiving a rental income.

He was sentenced to eight weeks in prison, suspended for a year, and given a 12-month supervision order.

He must also pay back the £12,454.74 overpayment.

Following the case the council made a proceeds of crime application and this week a confiscation order was made at Coventry Crown Court.

The order gives McGrory six months to pay a further £7,224.80. He will have 12 months to pay if he has to sell one of his properties to meet the repayment.

Coun Kevin Foster, deputy leader of Coventry City Council, said: “This man not only had the arrogance to think he could defraud the system, but also the sheer stupidity to boast about his luxurious lifestyle.

"Thankfully another person had the community spirit to ring the fraud hotline and help save the public a lot of money.”

I think that the fact that a tip off was taken seriously should encourage all of us to think about tipping off the authorities when we know that someone is falsely claiming our money we have paid in taxes!.

In 1987, The then governor of the state of Wisconsin was the Republican Party's Tommy Thomson. He introduced a pilot scheme which ultimately CUT the welfare roles by 87%. The Clinton Administration was so impressed by this that Bill Clinton signed the Welfare reform bill into law in 1998. Basically, the way it works is thusly: One starts out on full benefits. Then, one gets part time employment and part benefits. Finally, one shifts onto full time employment and NO benefits. One has two years to accomplish this from start to finish. The result now? Less than half a million people on benefits in a country with SIX times the population of the UK. For reasons obvious; They can't begin to implement the same here fast enough.

The revelation that people are taking cruises on unemployment benifet is just the tip of the iceburg I am afraid. This country is known all around the world as a "soft touch". I pay over £100 a week in taxes to keep these people in this sort of lifestyle, while I struggle to save up for my own holidays! You even get benifits for being FAT nowadays! Happy cruising.

I am appalled that this man can claim any benefits at all. He should not be allowed to claim housing benefit when he owns several properties. There are too many people in this country defrauding the councils and the government, when genuine people cannot claim anything at all. He should be made to pay it all back and any future claims should be cancelled for good.

The Government do it all the time and get off Scot free. You can't have a law for one and a law for another. Or can you? Our Prime Minister is a Scot. He would just claim it on his expenses.

What the hell is wrong with our judicial system? Defrauding the benefit system and guess what? Receiving EIGHT, Yes EIGHT weeks in prison. People like that should be given more like 8 years to deter others.

Glad he was caught out, only I would have sent him to prison for a few years and chopped his hands off.
