MSC Cruises uses infrared cameras to nab flu carriers

The Italian cruise line MSC Cruises is ultra serious about keeping the H1N1 swine flu virus off its ships.

The cruise line says it will screen all boarding passengers, using thermal-imaging cameras. Within seconds, the cameras produce infrared images of a person’s body, detecting higher-than-normal body temperatures, MSC said.

“An infrared camera is a very effective yet nonintrusive tool for detecting people infected with a viral disease even at a very early stage,” MSC said in a statement.

The Italian cruise line said it will have thermal-imaging cameras at the embarkation points of every one of its 11 ships, enabling its medical staff to monitor the temperature of every embarking passenger.

Many in the medical community are bracing for a widely anticipated second outbreak of swine flu this fall. Most cruise lines are conducting some sort of flu screening at embarkation, such as requiring passengers to complete health-related questionnaires — and mandatory secondary screening of passengers with flu-like symptoms.

Hm! They do say cleanliness is next to godliness. Maybe that is all it needs to save lives. After all it could be a very different announcement the Captain reads out at 12 noon. This is the Captain of the bridge. "For Whom The Bell Tolls" It tolls for thee. Ernest Hemingway. Thinking back to the black death. "Bring out your dead. Bring Out Your Dead". Its no good. I will have to stop reading all these horror stories by James Herbert and Stephen King. Its beginning to effect me. But still, swine flu doesn't sound so bad now.

just come back from a msc cruise fantasia we was very disapointed with the service and food it was like a holiday camp in the buffet area and no enforcement of the hand dispencers and half of them were empty they even closed the free drinks machine at lunch time so that you had to buy drinks which we have never had to do on cruise ships we got off on the 24th august and the same night my husband started with the flu and i got it 2 days later, never again on a italian ship

Perhaps they should begin with basic hygiene rather than infra red cameras holding up the shamabolic embarkation process. When we cruised from Santos to Venice on Musica earlier this year there was no enforcement of hand gel use before entering the dining areas; indeed most of the automatic dispensers were broken.

Other conditions they might like to test for that could be passed on, on board ship. Syphilis. Gonorrhea. Genatal Warts. Aids. Warts on Feet. Measles. German Measles. Mumps. Typhoid. Diphtheria. The Common Cold. And last but not least, The Black Death. Thought to be passed on by Rats! Best to be safe than sorry!

Pity they didn't have this system a year ago. We and 3000 others sailed from Venice to Santos last November aboard MSC Musica. Coughing and spluttering was soon evident and by the time we reached Brazil a great number of people had gone down with flu, including ourselves! Well, better late than never - well done to MSC, but please, please do not let it affect the embarkation process, which we have often found with MSC is already shambollic!

Well Done MSC. The last thing anyone wants on a holiday is to take ill, so precaution is advisable. MSC should be praised for the responsible attitude they hold with regards passenger health.
