Cruise Visitor falls off rocks

Local police have confirmed that an American male visitor to the Berry Islands died on Thursday when he accidentally fell into the water while walking on rocks.

Police Press Liaison Officer, Assistant Superintendent Walter Evans, said yesterday that the man believed to be in his mid-30s was with his wife when the accident occurred sometime around 9 a.m.

Evans reported that efforts were made to retrieve the man, but all attempts proved futile on Thursday.

According to international reports, the man was a passenger onboard a Miami-based Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) ship.

A statement released by NCL said the man and his wife were walking on rocks by the shore on Great Stirrup Cay in a remote part of the island when he fell into the water.

The report said following an extensive search, the man's body was recovered Friday morning.

Norwegian Sky's four-day Bahamas cruise departed Miami on Monday.

The NCL statement added: "We are saddened by this tragic accident. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of the guest during this difficult time."

The company did not release the man's age, name or where he was from. The Nassau Guardian was unable to obtain any further information on the matter.

very sad to read but amazed it happened so early in the morning-never realised passenger tours had already reached 1st destination by then, let alone climbed into the coach. if went on their own still very early to have happened surely. years ago went on a NCL cruise on board grand old lady of the seas S/S Norway to one of their own islands -Great Stirrup Cay and we all went off together and controlled by hordes of staff.
