Queen Elizabeth Construction Update

Queen Elizabeth ConstructionWe are delighted to bring you this update on the construction of the newest Cunarder, Queen Elizabeth, currently being built at the Fincantieri shipyard in Monfalcone, Italy.

Fincantieri, who also built Queen Victoria who joined the fleet in 2007, have a total of 600 employees dedicated to the construction of the first sections of the hull. Senior representatives from Cunard are closely monitoring every step of the production process to ensure that everything runs according to plan.

The steel plates required to complete the construction of her hull have all been commissioned and these weigh a total of 18,000 tonnes. On 18 September 2008 the very first steel plate was cut and this was recognised with a dedicated ceremony.

To date 12 main sections have been constructed. The keel laying section, which is the first section to be laid in the dry dock, has already been built and it is anticipated that the keel laying will be in June 2009 and in keeping with tradition will be marked with a special ceremony.

Don't bother to book if you are on your own. Cunard are charging an eye-watering single supplement of 175% for all Queen Elizabeth cruises. Is this single discrimination?

We often go to and back to N.Y. on the QM2, going again in May. We've got to like her, I would lke her even more if they stocked 'Bacardi 8'. Q.E.2's fairwell trip to Dubai was of course up to usual standards. Always said I'd go again and again on Q.E.2 even if she was just docked. If the New Q.E. is half as good at looking after us as she was, that will be good enough. (and we always have a cheap suite so we can go more often.) Ron & Betty Yates. Ron & Betty Yates

Queen Victoria is an excellent replacement for QE2. Yes it is a "Cruise" ship but they have pulled it off brilliantly. Have been on it twice and going on Q.V. another three times this year. Check out videos at www.welovecruiseships.com Nick

I hereby promise that, should I be lucky enough to secure a place on Queen Elizabeth's Maiden Voyage, and Cunard take earlier than expected delivery, I will not moan, threaten to sue, bleat, throw a tantrum or my toys out of the pram, or write tomes on these pages, if they introduce a short cruise prior to the Maiden Cruise, wherby I am not the first person to sleep in said booked stateroom. I'm impressed with your knowledge, unfortunately though not with the itinerary. Still there will be some sea time to 'discover' the ship. Regards. Richard
