Cruise Answers
Q: Could someone please advise me whether many people dress in DJ's and long dresses on the formal nights? We are going on a one week cruise on the new Odyssey, and need to know whether it's worth taking our formal wear just for the one night?

Many thanks in advance for your reponse.

We have been on Seabourn Legend many times and were on the Seabourn Pride in Nov 2009 and most people dressed up on formal nights.

I'm delighted to hear that! We have been on several other cruises and are thinking of going on Seabourn. My husband would never have agreed to cruising in the first place if he had to take part in "formal nights" - not at all his idea of a holiday. I like to wear something smart on those evenings and he certainly doesn't wear jeans, but neither does he wear a tie and jacket and he's never felt out of place.

Well, just to update my own question - we've just returned from our Seabourn Odyssey cruise. It was a complete waste of time my husband taking his DJ and me taking a long dress. Some people's idea of 'formal' is very different to ours. I was the only women I saw in a long dress, and there were a handful of men in DJ's. I only saw a few other ladies in clothes I would consider 'dressy' on the formal night, the vast majority in 'day' clothes. We even saw men in shorts on the formal night. If you're just going on a one week cruise, just take something nice to wear but leave the posh frock at home!!!

When are you going? My son is working on the Odysee at the moment. The rule is that you really ought to go for it. Flash as you like. You will not stand out in the crowd as they are all dressing up accordingly. That includes the staff.

We're going next week. Thanks very much for your response, nice to know we won't be in the minority, and we do like to dress up. When you read of people thinking jeans are 'formal' wear, it makes you wonder!!! Hope your son is enjoying his time aboard, we're really looking forward to it.

Oh come on ! Please ! Your going on Seabourn the new Odyssey how wonderfull .. and your asking if you should bother taking YOUR formal wear ( even only for one night )... if you have it YES ! why pay all that money and dress like you might do when you go out to your local restaurant.. If you were on the next table to me and I was on that ship I would expect you to be dressed up to the nines.. Have a fab time .Paul.. PS and let us know what it was like

The reason I asked was because we wanted to know if other people bothered!!! We are more than happy to dress, we always do, just didn't want to take our formal wear if nobody else does. Having read other reviews and people's interpretation of 'Formal', we didn't want to be overdressed. Thank you for your response.

yes is the short answer though a dark jacket and tie etc. will suffce. You could of course not bother and dine course by course in your stateroom or elegant casual in the buffet restaurant.
