Q: Hi all, we are new to cruising and are about to embark on our first to the canaries. But unlike, egypt, florida etc. i guess cargo shorts and t shirts are not the done thing. Problem is those two things make up most of my wardrobe. I do have the dinner suit, dicky bow and cumberband etc for the formal nights but am getting a bit worried about what i can wear on the others. Can someone let me know if cargo pants, and polo shirts are ok fro the men. If smart jeans and thin cotton jumpers are ok for the ladies and are kids (12) aloud 3/4 trousers or nice shorts. Sorry fro the question but being a policeman, I cant wait to relax out of uniform so i dont particularly want to be putting on shirt and tie just to go for food. 9 answers

Kingston, Neil, Tightwad and Wilde - Thanks very much for the replies, the whole point of the request was to avoid any issues, It does look like i hit a hot topic here as you put it Kingston. Am really looking forward to the cruise now but have decided to leave my tracky bottoms and hoody at home though LOL.

We have done 3 Royal Caribbean cruises so far and have always dressed as follows and fitted right in. Formal nights ... Suits for hubby and son(15), dress/longskirt and fancy top for me. Smart casual ... smart trousers and short sleeved collared shirts for the boys, smart trousers/skirt and nice blouses for me. Casual .. Son wears new jeans, hubby wears chinos, both with polo shirts and I wear same as smart casual nights. There is no need to wear a jacket or tie except on formal night. Shorts are not permitted in the Dining Room. You hit on a hot topic here!! And some people just enjoy being rude!! Enjoy your cruise- you'll love it!

Oh! Mrs Kingston, who are you suggesting is being rude, forthright and expressing an honest opinion would cover it, don't you think? Regards. .....Neil

I was referring to the comment below about eating in the WJ "with the rest of the slobs"! You might not think that's rude - I do.

Dressing nicely for dinner is not like wearing a uniform although I can see what you mean. I would suggest that you look at it this way: What would you wear go to a good upmarket restaurant with fully dressed waiters, surely not jeans or cargoes, a tie is not a prerequisite but it will make you look more handsome and a jacket as well will give you more authority. Dress down and people will notice that too. Sorry if this sounds dogmatic but I think you will want to feel comfortable. .... Neil

A nice pair of Chinos and an open neck, long or short sleeve shirt would suffice on evenings other than the formal nights. If you really want to stick to the shorts and T Shirts then dont eat in the main dining room and go to Windjammers for the Buffet and eat off a tray with the rest of the slobs. But I really do take offence at those who do not observe the dress code and I do think it is disrepectful to your Dining companions should you be sharing a Dining Table. If you dont want to dress up then why not chose a different cruise line such os Ocean Village?

I have been called a few things but a slob is a new one. I never expected to get a comment off Hyacinth Bucket, did love that episode of you trying to cruise!!! Can I suggest you put on your blazer and slacks and toddle off onto a Cunard Cruise. and as stated above yes I do take offence.

how rude to say that people who eat in windjammers are slobs !!!, infact on my most recent cruise on IOTS 20/9/8 there were even people in formal ware eating there ! plus some people feel more comfortable eating there because of many reasons , I know a lot of disabled people went there not out of choice but because they did not want to be a burden in the main dining rooms in struggling to get to there designated tables !i also spoke to a couple whoose husband finds it a struggle to eat in front of people ! at the end of the day these are HUMAN beings just like you ! just thank god that you are normal (if there is such a word to describe you !) but dont call people slobs because they choose to eat wearever they wish !! and you dont eat off a tray ! they dont have trays !
