I used to adapt the school uniform for my boys on the formal nights; particularly so as at this age they are growing so fast, they can quickly outgrow a tux. Use their black school shoes, black school trousers, white shirt with bow tie. If you really want to finish the look off buy a cheap school blazer (I saw some in Tescos for around £10). Honestly people will not know the difference. My sons often wear their formal gear to dinner, but afterwards when they go to join in with the rest of the teenagers they ditch the DJ and change into something else. For the rest of the nights smart trousers or smart jeans with collared open neck shirt or nice polo top will suffice. As for the themed nights, not everyone joins in so they will not be out of place in their normal gear.

How did your son feel about wearing school clothes in the holiday. My 14 yr old is almost 6ft with a rugby players build, he lives in jeans or shorts and rugby tops. he is excited about the cruise as he loves anything to do with boats but I haven't confessed to him about the need to look smart. How did you tackle this?

If he is almost 6 ft I would actually splash out on a proper Evening Suit. Asda were selling them off a week or so ago for silly money (about £20) Failing that you can usually get the whole kit Trousers, DJ, Shirt and bow tie from Matalan for around £40-£45. My son is 14 now and he too is 6ft, so now he has the proper attire and hopefully it will last - assuming he doesnt grow too fast as they do! But while they were still growing you would be amazed just how good the School 'put together ' outfit looks. I also bought him a good pair of shoes from TK Maxx.

On P&O formal, semi formal applies everywhere even Cafe Bordeaux and applies to everyone, but he would get away with smart black trousers, shirt, tie etc. On formal nights get him a tux, Matalan etc , we have a great picture of 70 teenagers on Aurora on the main stairs on the atrium all dressed up with our two teenage daughters in it, they all loved it and had a ball, have a great cruise!
