Holland America Cruises History
Holland America Line was founded in 1873 as the Netherlands-America Steamship Company, shipping immigrants to the New World from Rotterdam. It moved its headquarters to New York in 1971. It bought into Alaskan hotels and transportation when it acquired Westours in 1983, and is one of the state’s biggest employers. In 1989, it was acquired by Carnival Cruise Lines, but retained its Seattle-based headquarters.
HAL carries both traditional cruise passengers (senior citizens, alumni groups) and multi-generational families. It tries hard to keep its Dutch connections, with antique artefacts and traditional decor, as well as Indonesian stewards. It has a private island, Half Moon Cay, in the Bahamas.

We arranged our own
cruise & stay with 3
nights in Fort
Lauderdale; 7 nights on
Eurodam followed by 4
nights in Key West.
Renting a car to take us
down to KW and back, a
car was unnecessary in FL
so we taxied to the port
ignoring the rude taxi
driver...
What a great waste of my
time and money. If you
are thinking of cruising
on the Zaandam, think
again, don't!
I was looking forward to
my trip from Sydney to
the South Pacific islands
and then up to Singapore
via Indonesia...
This was our first time
with Holland America and
before going we were told
it would be superb by a
number of people. We
have been accustomed to
standards set by

star rating bracket.

What a cruise of
contrasts, from excellent
to downright poor. Set
sail from Sydney 22nd
december 2011.The
boarding was handled very
efficiently and the staff
excellent. On board the
ship was very dated and
in some parts shabby.The
cabin was spacious ...
The weather was quite
windy but not much swell
on several of the sailing
days however the ship
rolled & pitched
making many people
seasick ( there were sick
bags available in the
lift lobbies ) I was
suprised at the motion of
the ship & made
enquiries...
This was our 3rd cruise
with HAL & we weren't
dissapointed ,our cabin
was spacious we were near
a lift which I had asked
for & our cabin
stewards were very
helpfull everything done
with a smile on their
faces...
Evidently catered for
more mature guests.
Service in Rotterdam
dining room left much to
be desired. Very slow
service. If you ate at
around 6:00pm you had no
chance of seeing 8:00pm
show. Achoholic drinks
were very expensive and
with 15% service charge
made...
First of all I should
explain that only my wife
had previously been on a
cruise, and that for the
rest of us (another
couple & myself) this
was our first time.
Cruise.co.uk were very
attentive in helping us
choose a package that
they thought would...
Our 4th Cruise , 2nd in
Europe, to the Norwegian
Fjords . This was our
first outing on a Holland
America ship. The Ryndam
was smaller than any
other we had been on and
we were a little unsure
if we would find enough
to entertain us or indeed
enough space to...
