Holland America Cruises History
Holland America Line was founded in 1873 as the Netherlands-America Steamship Company, shipping immigrants to the New World from Rotterdam. It moved its headquarters to New York in 1971. It bought into Alaskan hotels and transportation when it acquired Westours in 1983, and is one of the state’s biggest employers. In 1989, it was acquired by Carnival Cruise Lines, but retained its Seattle-based headquarters.
HAL carries both traditional cruise passengers (senior citizens, alumni groups) and multi-generational families. It tries hard to keep its Dutch connections, with antique artefacts and traditional decor, as well as Indonesian stewards. It has a private island, Half Moon Cay, in the Bahamas.

hi my wief and i are just
back from a 14 night back
to back cruie to the
norwegian fjords ship was
nice and clean cabin ok
but no fridge not 5star
bathroom not cleaned very
well soap dish not
cleaned for 2 weeks main
food hall was very good
on a par with...
Just back from our
seventh cruise, each with
a different line, and
this is probably the
friendliest boat we have
sailed on.
seven day cruise to the
Norwegian Fjords aboard
MS Ryndam of Holland
America, Dover to Dover...
This was the first time
we had cruised with HAL,
having previously cruised
with
RCI/Costa/NCL/Carnival
and initially had some
concerns over the
facilities available for
our 14 yr old son and 17
yr old daughter - as the
cliental appeared a lot
older on the HAL...
A fine ship that offered
us everything we wanted
without being too large.
The food in the Rotterdam
Dining Room was very good
with some imaginative
combinations on the menu.
The self-service Lido
restaurant offered a
wonderful selection of
food - I...
We have just returned
from a Caribbean cruise
on Holland America's ms
Maasdam, our first cruise
with this company. Our
first impression was not
good as it took over 5
hours from arrival at
Miami to check in at an
isolated hotel in Fort
Lauderdale...
The ship was large and
well equipped. The staff
were friendly and
helpful, although they
became a little manic
towards the end of the
holiday when it was
obvious their jobs
depended on them getting
a "9" (top)score...
The Veendam is a very
impresive looking Ship
and we were meet by a
very smart officer and
stewardsissued with ID
card, ships plan and
showen to our cabin. This
was an interior midships
an deck 5. We were very
pleased with the size and
lay out of the cabin...
We took a cruise from
Singapore to HongKong on
the Zaandam in March.
This was our fourth
cruise and the first with
Holland America. We
enjoyed the cruise
overall. Our cabin on
the Lower Promenade Deck
was in a handy position
and a reasonable size...
We just returned on 20th
April from an 11 day
cruise to the Panama
Canal and we found the
following:
The food was often served
cold in the Vista dining
room, and compared with
all other cruises we have
been on, the selection
and standards were very
low...
