Q: I'm going on my first holiday on my own, a Baltic cruise on Boudicca in September.
two questions... (to start with)
1. What is the weather like up there at that time of year? I've worked out my wardrobe - OK... there's going to be a tender boat behind the cruiser carrying it! but I need to know cold/hot/wet/dry... or all of the above.
2. What's it like for single persons onboard? is it mainly couples? are you sidelined to the table furthest away from life?
Thanks Kim

Hi Many thanks for the responses... I will be celebrating my 50th birthday in St Petersburg! so not quite sure if I just slide into the box of "mature ladies" that have been mentioned! :-) Shopping list has been extended to add kagule and brolly. Is there a max weight limit for luggage like a flight holiday?

The weather should be ok but you would be advised to take rainproof clothes and wear "layers". Nobody can guarantee the weather. Don't take too much luggage as you may have storage problems. You will have great time. One of the best things about Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines is the way that "singles" quicky integrate. I have travelled solo many times and have shared table with couples, families and singles. It is not difficult to get to know people on this relatively small ship. You will find the staff happy, friendly and helpful. You will enjoy "Boudicca" - it is a lovely ship.

Hi Kim, as Malcolm says, I'm sure you will have a really good holiday on Boudicca. I've travelled as a single traveller on F.O. ships on ten occasions, twice on Boudicca. I went to the Baltic a couple of years ago at the beginning of September and the weather was changeable, but not cold. We had a few heavy downpours and an umbrella would be a useful addition to your ever expanding luggage! You will find many single travellers on board; I've met the same people over and over again. F.O. has a very loyal client base. Have you requested to sit at a large table for dinner? I usually find that a table for 6/8 works very well. You could ask to be seated with other singles and on occasions F.O. seem to do just that. I've shared a table with singles, married couples and friends travelling together and have met many sociable friendly people over the years. Try to attend the 'singles' meeting, usually on the second day, if only to make yourself known to the staff; they will look after you. Many ladies travelling alone like to meet others for trips ashore, to find a partner for bridge (not my scene, but it could be yours) or just for friendly chats in the day and drinks in the evening. You will only be alone if you wish to be. If you dance, there will be male dance hosts who will be happy to partner you for a waltz, quickstep or jive. Some of the liveliest nights I've had on any cruise ship have been on F.O. ships, so disregard all the miseries who say Fred's ships only attract the elderly. As I'm not sure of your age or interests, it's difficult to be specific, but you may enjoy the gym, yoga or dance classes. Try to join in with group activities and make the effort to chat, people love to tell you all about themselves. Have a great holiday and I may see you on board. I'm just waiting for that last minute bargain that I can't possibly refuse. Regards - Jan

Kim, firstly you have picked a charming/friendly ship and a fascinating itinerary. The Baltic weather is not unlike the UK's - unpredictable, so you will need the full range from sun screen to an umbrella. There certainly will be a number of single (more mature) women onboard.
