a QUESTION by Makin (20 Jun 09 17:51)
I went on the QM2 in May 2007 and wore a black tux on one night and a white one on the other formal night - I didn't feel out of place in my white one, in fact it felt quite novel! I was only 30 then, so I'd say age has nothing to do with it. I'd also heard all the talk about white for the tropics only but no one seemed bothered to me (we were on a transatlantic cruise). In fact people on our table commented how nice it was to stand out from the crowd! Go for it, i'd say!

Dictionary Definition : Cocktail dress for ladies - short evening dress suitable for wearing at a drinks party.
In other words, something you would wear for a special occasion - a bit dressy - a bit smart - made from luxurious fabrics like silk, satin, velvet. If all else fails the LBD = little black dress will fit most occasions that are formal, exdept when occasion demands long evening dresses for ladies and black tie for gentlemen. I wont enter the argument of black tie [dinner jacket] or white tux as I am not sure of the rules - if there are any? If my Dad were alive, and able to comment I am sure he would opt for white tux for the tropics.

Now I may be oldfashioned but surely a white tuxedo is to be worn at outdoor events during summer or in tropical climes and not at a black tie event in autumn.
But then I'm a casual cruiser with Ocean Village so what on earth would I know about formal wear (according to some slights in the answers to other questions).
It may be acceptable on some cruise lines but I understand Cunard to be more formal so I'd perhaps check it out on one of the cruise forums with other Cunard passengers.
The first answer below seems to be getting white tuxedo confused with white tie (the latter being more formal but pretty obsolete these days).
Ladies wear is much easier - anything dressy but not day wear whether it be full length or calf length would be fine.

I think due to the americanization of the world, a white tux is, as Malcolm inferred, a white dinner jacket. Whilst they look very smart, I think they are worn more by the older gentleman[65+]. You wouldn't be at all out of place in one but equally, a black DJ is as good and probably more common.

White dinner jackets are traditionally worn in the tropics and med but today they seem to be worn at any formal night. It has got to be a lot better than a sports shirt that so many now want to wear! I have had a white for over twenty years (not the same one) and I still haven’t reached sixty.

I looked in to this a couple of years ago and the conclusion I came to was : White jacket; Hot climates, the US and cruises. Black jacket; Everywhere else. Last year in the med on the QV I'd say about 5% of men wore white, 94.9% wore black and one Japanese passenger wore something that can only be described as looking like the hippo on the Silent Night advert, i.e. stripy pajamas.
