Q: We are going on a mini-cruise on the QM 2 to Europe in July 2009. Ages in our party are 43,48, 68 and 83. Must we buy CRUISE insurance or can we just get ordinary TRAVEL insurance. We will not be doing any extreme sports and only visiting France, holland and Belgium. We are departing from Southampton and returning to Southampton (where we live)... 13 answers

type in the word insurance in the search option on questions and you find plently of suggestions. which ever company you use make sure that they are aware of the fact you are doing a cruise. I would recommend INTUNE (http://www.intunegroup.co.uk) they will cover some pre existing conditions and cruising without additional premium. They have no age restrictions

You will need to ask for and pay extra for the following as they are excluded from the normal insurance:- United States of America, Canada, Caribbean islands, Bahamas and Mexico.

Get your European health card by ordering on the Internet (it is Free from the NHS). This covers you for hospital in EU countries. You are REQUIRED by the cruise company to have insurance to cover you all for your trip. The reason you need to be wary with travel insurance is that it costs a lot if you are treated on board ship hence ALWAYS mention you are going on a cruise ship. ALWAYS tell them if you are on any medication at all, ie. simvastatin, drugs for high blood pressure etc. that are prescribed. ANY claim on any insurance will be held void if you don't. Finally the 68yr old will pay more as over the magic 60. The 83 yr old will have a LOT of problems getting cover AT ALL and you should Start with a quote from the Cruise lines own insurance company. They are often the only ones that will cover over 80's at all. Even age concern, saga and help the aged would not cover my father in law. There is more advice on the site. put in insurance in the search above.

I would check the policy carefully re medical insurance. Hope she declares any pre existing conditions/ medications etc or the insurance will be void.

Ordinary travel insurance DOES normally covers cruises. Shop around on-line for a good price. Try the comparison sites.

Thank you - thats what I was unsure about. We are only going on a minicruise - 4 nights and only going to Europe - so didnt want to have to pay over the odds - just what was necessary. Both mother in law(at 68) and father in law (at 84) do not have pre-existing conditions - just take tablets for High blood pressure and other takes tablets for thyroid - no treatment plan as both ok apart form this... Also didnt know if we HAD to get CRUISE insurance as its only a mini cruise and we did not need to be covered over the odds as we will be going into port each day (France, Belgium and Holland). Will llok into this further....thanks
