How this score is created
The American Showlounge is the principal venue for large-scale production shows and major cabaret acts (although some pillars obstruct the views from several seats). In a typical 4- or 5-day cruise, there will be one or two, large-scale, trend-setting production shows, with a cast of two lead singers and a clutch of dancers, backed by a live orchestra. These have been the mainstay of Carnival’s “we’ve got the fun” entertainment theme for years. They are of the razzle-dazzle, Las Vegas-style revues that have little or no story line or flow (there’s lots of running around on stage and stepping in place, but very little dancing). However, the skimpy costumes are very colorful, as is the lighting (with extensive use of “color mover” lights). Stage smoke appears to be in constant use during the production shows, and volumes are ear-splitting.
With all the audio-visual support staff, dressers, and stage managers, the personnel count comes to almost 40. Other speciality acts take center stage on nights when there is no production show, and late-night adults-only comedy (typically with very blue material and language) is also standard aboard the ships of Carnival Cruise Lines. Carnival rotates entertainers aboard its ships, so passengers see different acts each night.
Almost every lounge/bar has live bands and musical units, so there is always plenty of live music happening (mostly in the evenings).
