![]() While not always compulsory, tipping can be a confusing issue where cruising is concerned. Below is a guide to the amount of gratuities and service charges you can expect to be added to your on board account.
Ways to pay: What's the difference? Pre Pay: If you want to, some cruiselines offer the option to ‘pre pay’ for your gratuities at time of booking. Auto: This way, gratuities are added automatically to your shipboard account to be paid at the end of the cruise, if you so wish. You can also increase or decrease the daily amount to a figure of your liking - just tell the purser at the beginning of your cruise. Personally: Alternatively, you can pay whom you like in person at the end of the cruise. The pursers desk normally gives you envelopes for this purpose - just ask.
Please note: The above information should be used as a guide only. The data was collected in Nov 08 and was approved by the relevant cruiselines at the time. This information is updated on a yearly basis and if, in the meantime, cruiselines choose to change/increase their tipping charges, Cruise.co.uk cannot be held responsible. Please check the relevant cruise line brochure for up-to-date information. 1 2 3 4 5 6 Next»

Has anyone cruised with louis cruises? We are cruising in September and their tipping is deducted at end of cruise, but I would rather tip to staff that have given good service, so can you opt out of fixed payment Thank you

Does anyone know whether the imposition of a fixed payment at the end of a cruise for tips as in the case of Costa for example is actually legal - or whether it has been challenged in Court?

Thomson manage to have a " gratuities paid " policy and all cruise lines should do the same.
If you then wish to give a tip for services you may.
Staff should be decently paid and this should be reflected in the up front price of the cruise.

I fully agree with you. We have just returned from a Celebrity cruise (Century) and the add-ons were horrendeous. Gratuities were charged on drinks (15%), plus they left space on the bills for you to add tips for the waitiers. This does not include the £9.75 per person per day added to your bill. Never again on an American ship. Why can't they just put the prices on, including taxes, gratuities etc, then you know exactly what you are paying.

The Costa figures are wrong. On a 17 day cruise we were charged 5 Euros per day and no leeway. We didn't arrive onboard until 9pm in Hong Kong and left at 10am on day 17. We wre charged for the full 17 days. They also add 15% to drinks bills. With the Euro now being par to the pound, drinks are very expensive. A small beer costing £5 and a spirit and mixer £7.50.
Excursions were very expensive.
We were told by our dining room staff that they don't automatically get tips passed on. It all depends on the comments received on the questionaire that you fill in. If you give them "excellent" then they will get a proportion of the tips.
I have found you get the best service when tips are optional as the staff really go out of their way to please you.

You are wrong to say that P&O charge 18% on drinks and spa treatments. They DO NOT add 18% on your drinks. The price you see is the price you get.

We went on Caribbean Princess in Nov 08 and as the previous year we had the "service" charge removed from our account at the start of the cruise, but if you forget just go to the pursers desk any time and tell them, as many of the comments made most people don't get a tip for the work they do, and just because you cruise doesn't mean you have buckets of money, i am sure that we are all looked on as easy targets, we tip those who give good service, but to set a fee in advance is insulting to all passengers, we make a point of letting any one know that we get chatty with, it's surprising how many think it's mandatory, hope everyone else points fellow passengers in the right direction, why should we be made to feel mean by doing so.
