Is it true that Royal Caribbean make you pay gratuties before you sail and before you receive good service and then also give you envelopes in case you want to give more.

You have the choice to prepay your gratuities and yes they give you the voucher at the end of the cruise and you put the relevant voucher for the relevant staff member in the envelope. You are under
no pressure to add any thing else in the envelope. It is entirely up to you if you wish and just give the person a tip seperately when you give the envelope out. This I usaully only do for excellent service. One thing i have found as we do pay our gratuities up front it does save money, as the vouchers are usually lower than giving money. Also on RCL dont know about other lines if you decide to go on Open Dining you have to pay up front unless you cannot go on open dining. The reason if that if you opt for open dining and on the last night not go to the resturant for dining it is the way of avoiding tipping. If you decide to dine in the Windjammer restuarant there are always boxes to put tips in at the end of the curise. Any extra above the recommended amount is purely up to the passenger

As the previous reviever commented, the gratuities are added to your on-board account. The envelopes normally are for guests to insert the vouchers\" that are left in your cabin. These envelopes are marked with the crew who the gratuities are for. Normally the Room steward, waiter, head waiter

RCI do add gratuities to your onboard account but you can have them removed and then pay to individuals yourself...i haven't done anytime dining but i think you may have to pay in advance for this option...which i'm not too keen on myself
