Precious Cargo

A passenger sailing with Cunard this weekend took “Baby on board” to a whole new level. Doctor were shocked when a guest only known as Johanna went into Labor 3 weeks before her due date on Saturday night, before docking in Brooklyn on Sunday morning.

The 150,000 ton Queen Mary 2 was coming to an end of a transatlantic cruise which departed Southampton, UK on January 10, when doctors were quick to react as Johanna’s waters broke, and baby boy Benjamin Brooklyn  was safely delivered in the QM2’s onboard medical facility.

Johanna’s brother who did not give him name said “She turned to me and said, ‘It’s starting!’

On docking mother and baby were rushed to New York Methodist Hospital with the infant after arriving at the Red Hook Cruise Terminal at around 6 a.m. Sunday. Reports say both are doing well and baby Benjamin is very healthy. For Johanna this is her third child but first baby boy and Benjamin will officially hold a USA passport.

Official’s from Cunard are yet to comment on the circumstance of the family joining the ship so heavily pregnant, In the UK we are prevented from booking any expectant mothers after 28 weeks, due to these very risks.
