Costa 5 year Anniversary.

I am sure you can all remember the shocking news and images we all saw back in January 2012. The tragic sinking of Costa Concordia with 4252 guests and crew on board. 32 of these were drowned.

Concordia hit rocks and capsized in Italian waters which left us all wondering how this awful accident could happen. There was total outrage when
Captain Francesco Schettino left the ship before all of the passengers. It soon became clear why.

It has been proven that he steered the ship too close to the water to impress a friend, allowing her to hit underwater rocks.

This caused mayhem within the cruise industry with passengers and management questioning safety. It is so sad that this happened to make us more safety aware than ever. New policies were put into place and a survey now states that 73% of passengers now feel safer at sea.

I myself have cruised with Costa since this incident and must agree they were strict and very professional when carrying out muster drill.me costa

Captain Francesco was sentenced to 16 years in jail for manslaughter. He was given a longer term because he gave false information to the port authorities. He did appeal and try to say Costa were at fault but this was rejected.

Concordia was removed from the sea last year and is now being turned into scrap metal in the port of Genoa. On sailing into Genoa a couple of years ago we could just see her. It has been estimated that 70% of the total 144500 tonnes will be recycled. The cost of the salvage is costing up to £1.2 billion which makes it the most expensive salvage in Maritime History.

We offer our deepest sympathy to the families connected in this tragedy.
