If It’s Raining and Pouring Don’t Let it Be Boring!

It is your worst nightmare, you are on your cruise, you look out and it’s bucketing down with rain AND IT’S A SEA DAY!!

Your heart probably sinks, the thought of a whole day on board and not a glimmer of sun on the horizon but this is actually a perfect opportunity to explore the ship and check out things that you might not have even noticed

Most people find bad weather comfort in food! I was watching the Princess Cruise documentary and the head chef said that everyone heads for the buffet but this is not the only way to avoid the puddles

Passengers receive daily newsletters with a long list of on board schedules and rain or shine activities. There are some fun things to do, from bingo to shows to games, head to the ship’s library where you can play board games and work on puzzles. Challenge your travel companions, or invite other passengers to play — you’re all looking to pass the time, so why not make some new friends? This being the library, there will also be novels to peruse as well as guide books if you want to start planning future shore excursions.

Why not head to the Spa and enjoy a relaxing treatment or facial or hit the heat in the calmness of the sauna or indoor hot tub – a great place to avoid the rain while enjoying some relaxation. Most spas let you book a day pass so that you can take advantage of the thermal suites and sauna

If you are in the Med or a Tropical destination the chances are at least it is warm rain so why not order room service and enjoy the storm from your balcony

If you feel like exploring why not take a galley tour – it might not be free but often on sea days you can get the tour as an excursion.

Have you even noticed the millions of pounds of art on board? . Celebrity Eclipse has its own dedicated art gallery (which also hosts auctions), and if you are on board Oceania you can take a complimentary audio guide from the purser’s desk and wander the ship while getting the inside scoop on 25 works by artists like Joan Miró and Damien Hirst.

Is there anything better on a rainy day than settling down with a bag of popcorn and bucket of cola in front of a new release? Many liners have their own cinemas, including P&O which boasts Hollywood blockbusters on-board each of its ships and Princess features ‘Movies Under The Stars (or Rain!!)

Rest assured – the activity directors know that all of the passengers will be disappointed by the downpour and lots of extra indoor activities are added to the daily schedule. Look for everything from dance lessons to cooking demos, trivia quizzes to wine or cocktail tastings, towel animal-folding tutorials to karaoke – even if the weather is shocking you can still keep your disposition sunny!!
