Cruise ships are lucky to have some of the most prestigious and famous godmothers. Having a godmother for a ship is a longstanding naval tradition. New ships are to be sponsored by a civilian which is typically a woman. With this honorific title, the cruise ship godmother is selected to bring good luck and protection to the vessel as well as being part of the naming ceremony. The ship is then christened with a bottle of champagne (done by pressing a button these days) as good luck.
But this week I read an article about a travel agent who was named as the godmother of a ship!
Marella cruises’ newest addition to the fleet Marella Explorer is joining the fleet next month and to carry on the tradition the ship has a godmother, well actually Tui have decided Marella Explorer is going to have 2! They will be heading out to Majorca to be part of the launch on the 17th May
Sue Stewart who is the cruise lines hotel operations manager and TUI agent Mandy Galloway from Scotland were the 2 lucky ladies to be chosen. Traditionally Tui have always looked to their staff to be Godmothers to their ships as recognition for their hard work.
Marella Cruises’ managing director, Chris Hackney, said Stewart and Galloway were “two outstanding employees. Both Sue and Mandy have contributed greatly to TUI and significantly our cruise business over the years.
What a fantastic way to reward hard-working individuals in a company, well done TUI!
So just to give you an idea of some of the other Godmothers out there I have compiled the list of my top 10 Godmothers!
