What The Fukushima is going on in Japan?

As a cruise consultant, in recent years we have seen huge growth in our Tailor-Made and Bucket List itineraries; few more popular than visiting Japan and Korea. We have the cherry blossom Japan tours with the bullet trains, Hiroshima and Robot Cabaret shows. Some of our Princess and Royal Caribbean itineraries visit Seoul in Korea.

Right now the world waits in anticipation as Trump flexes his muscle over the Far East. Asking for cooperation from China to “deal with the problem that is North Korea”

Couple this with the almost unspoken threat level of Japan’s Fukushima Plant leaking radioactive material. I can’t help but think this is a region on the brink of nuclear disaster.

Since the cold war and the devastation caused at Hiroshima and latterly Chernobyl we have not witnessed a natural disaster with as many devastating long term effects as reactor number 2 at the Fukushima plant.

Recent tests show thousands of times more nuclear material than is considered safe for human life. Now I do accept the argument that the camera that measures the readings are getting closer to the epicenter, however most nuclear physicists  agree that Fukushima is actually a devastating time bomb that no body has answers to.

What does this mean for the region?

It means, leaking nuclear material is already changing the beauty of the wildlife in the Pacific ocean. I do honesty wonder about eating fish off the Japanese coastline and wonder how much hazardous material is being digested; All this from a nation of raw fish loving folk.

And what of North Korea we have a lack of knowledge and a lack of control in a rouge nation, that has increased the threat level for South Korea. This is nothing new the heightened threat level for South Korea has been apparent for over a quarter of a century. We now however have a western world who are doomed if you do attack and very much doomed if you don’t.

When we put together bucket list holidays, we were not thinking of a last trip to a region on the brink but let me ask you this?

Can you envisage a time in the not to distant future when travel to parts of Japan and Korea are banned? That would be a huge shame for one of the most spectacular places in the world.

We have already seen travel banned in parts of the world with Natural heritage sites and Natural Wonders such as Syria, Turkey, Egypt, Tunisia to name but a few. Anymore threats from Kim Jong – Un and the world’s travel tourism board will need to start evaluating the threat to human life.

My view is this…

Book your trip now. I’m talking bucket list Japan and Korea. Make sure you have seen everything you wish to see in the region and take advantage of the beauty that surrounds you.

We can not take anything for granted in this life so why wait. Japan and Korea what the Fukushima is going on nobody really knows or if they do they are not telling us, so visit whilst we still can.
