Over cautious or the right thing to do?

Following the devastating truck attack that killed 84 people in Nice, France on Bastille Day, Cruise Lines featuring the French Riviera city along the Cote d’Azur are modifying their plans. This is only months after many of the cruise lines also pulled out of calls to Istanbul after their recent troubles and after the weekends failed coup probably a wise decision.

Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd. is stopping for now its shore excursions in Nice and upping its security  in French ports. The company is quoted as saying, “We are providing support and assistance to our corporate team members, shipboard staff and guests with loved ones in and around Nice. Ships from the NCLH fleet were not operating tours to Nice at the time of the incident.”

Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. is altogether cancelling port calls on Nice, sending Royal Caribbean International’s Navigator of the Seas on a day at sea last Friday and Celebrity Cruises’ Celebrity Constellation to Livorno, Italy for an overnight stay this past Saturday. Regarding those changes, the company said, “After reviewing all of the available information and along with discussions with our Global Security team in Miami, we have decided to cancel our next two calls to Nice,“ and it will “continue to monitor the situation” beyond.

Individual cruise lines are also responding as Holland America Line stated, “Holland America Line operates five tours to the Nice area from the port of Monte Carlo. They are carefully reviewing and monitoring the situation and should tours to Nice change, booked guests will be notified.”

Meanwhile, MSC Cruises added that the line is “providing passengers with the option to either cancel for a full refund or change their shore excursion plans…there is currently no restriction in place by the local security forces that would make this mandatory.”

Additionally, while P&O Cruise line said, “All shore excursions to Nice have been cancelled and passengers have been advised to avoid Nice centre.”

What are your thoughts on this?  Would you want to go into Nice now after the attacks……..surely now with the extra security it must be the safest place to go or does it not feel morally right to go after so many innocent people including children lost their lives.   The people of Nice and France need us tourists desperately but I can see both sides and really don’t know if I would travel so soon after this cowardly attack especially with my children.

Nice is such a lovely place, I sailed from there a few years back on Silversea’s Silver Spirit and was lucky enough see the beautiful resort in its glory, and would have loved to have gone back, but now with children i would honestly think twice, but that’s applicable to so many destinations now, never before have we had to think so much about where and how we travel.

I just can’t imagine how scary it must’ve been for the families caught up in Nice.

France is suffering at the moment, but I’m sure this great country can get through this and show these terrorists we will not be beaten!
