Modern Communication Technology – How Have We Become So Dependent?

Well, I can tell you that for the past week, me and technology have fallen out big time!

I’ve had an absolute nightmare struggling with the various programmes I need to use on a daily basis in order to do my job.                                             My system isn’t the only thing that’s broken down!  I have literally been pulling my hair out!

Folks – there’s been tears, I’m not ashamed to share this news with you………

So it got me thinking of how dependent we all are on modern comms technology, we are ruled by it, whether it’s the Social Media. Smart Phones, Ipads, Notepads, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest, Snapchat and a zillion more apps….. or our work tools.  How did we ever manage without the Internet???

Now I may be giving away my age when I tell you this, but when I started work a good few decades ago, us oldies didn’t even have a photocopier to make our lives easier.  We didn’t even have facsimile machines (Fax machines) Mobile phones? Never heard of them!  I thought all my Christmases’ had come when I got my first auto correct Electric Typewriter!  Early Computers needed their own rooms, they were so big!  The World Wide Web was still a figment in someone’s imagination. We never contemplated in the 70’s how technology would progress so quickly with advanced and sophisticated hardware and software!  My first mobile phone was the size of a house brick!  I remember my brother using a CB Radio to converse with his pals!

With new advancements being created almost every day the world is a different place – Technology Rules and we are its slaves.

So as a Homeworker I am totally dependent on the Internet, ISP’s VPN’s for my telephone which uses a VOIP (that’s Voice Over Internet Protocol to the uninformed…), booking systems, emails, invoices, confirmations, you name it – I need a programme for it!  And when everything is working, life is good.

But when programmes start playing up, my phone stops working or the Internet drops, which means all my communication tools don’t work, that’s when I am at a complete loss as to what to do.  The extent of my IT knowledge ends with ‘Control, Alt, Delete’ – if that doesn’t work , I hand over to our IT Team, put the kettle on and cry tears of frustration!

Experiments have been carried out to see how people manage without  Modern Technology for a short period of time.  Actually talk to people, instead of text, or email. Get outdoors!  Exercise! Meet people!  No social media!  Imagine!

Could you manage a week without taking a selfie? or using your technology?   Bet you couldn’t!
