The Hurricane Aftermath – The Caribbean will survive.

As the Caribbean start to put their selves back together after the devastating hurricanes of Irma and Maria, now the UK is getting a taste of the same weather in the form of Hurricane Ophelia. Currently battering Ireland and causing extremely weird sun and skies across England, we hope that all keep safe and sound during these strong weather incidents.

Many years ago I was caught up in a hurricane in the Dominican Republic, I was in the north of the Island in the Puerto Plata area and I can tell you it was not a pleasant time. For just over 24 hours we were kept in doors with shutters down and candles burning listening to the extreme winds and rain outside. It was a scary time and none of us knew what would be outside once we were brave enough to re-open the doors and windows. Thankfully, the group of people I was with were great fun, we sat up talking, drinking and eating in the candlelight and eventually slept through the night whilst the hurricane continued.

The following morning was so calm and still, the rain had stopped, the wind no more. The hurricane had passed through and now it was time to see what damage had been caused. I was staying in a small pension just a row back from the sea and beach. When we eventually braved the outdoors we could see what force the Hurricane had had and it was only a minor one!

Trees across roads, roofs half missing and cars upside down! The beautiful golden beaches and aqua blue seas was gone, looking dirty and muddy from the way the winds and sea had churned and crashed against the shores.

However, within just a few days you would not have known the Island had been hit by this hurricane as the community of the Island kept strong and the clean up commenced ready to start Island life again. Beaches was cleaned, the sea turned back to it’s aqua blue state and life continued.

My First Trip To the Republica Domincana.

I know the recent hurricanes have near on destroyed some of the most popular islands in the Caribbean. But believe me when I say that these communities will not be beat by rain and wind. With the continued support of the cruise community too, watch the greatness of Tortola, Dominica, St Maarten and Puerto Rico come back stronger and ready for the tourist to arrive by the ship load.. literally.

So if you have a trip planned to the Caribbean in the coming weeks and months, bear with the cruise lines whom have had to change itineraries to make sure you still enjoy your cruise vacation and enjoy all that the Caribbean has to offer. Make the most of extended stays in other Islands and if you was meant to visit one of the affected Islands, then there’s another excuse to sail in the Caribbean when these Islands are back for business.

If you get an extended stay in St Kitts, don’t forget to visit it’s smaller sister island Nevis.. breathtakingly beautiful.
