50 shades of Orange
Just back from the supermarket this morning and as I was stood in the queue to pay there was a couple of ladies in the aisle across who I can only describe as orange, I have never seen such a colour on anyone before! Summer holiday time, It got me thinking about the benefits of being outdoors compared to the lengths people go for a tan.
We brit’s love a tan and forget the power of the sun, always day 1 on any holiday or cruise that evening you see the red tan marks out in force, not good !
Exposure to the sun is good for you if you do it carefully. And most people feel better with a tan.
I am not a great sun worshiper, I cannot lay in it unlike a lot of my friends but I have to admit that when someone says “you have a good colour have you been away?” I do smile mainly because it is not often, you cannot tell normally that I have been away to a sunny climate, any colour I get is very gradual.
One of the few things that bugs me about cruise lines is the amount of shade they have on deck. Whilst many cruise lines have a huge amount of sun loungers not many have shade in these areas, unless you go to the adult only “small fee” areas. I know that a thousand umbrellas on a cruise ship would be a logistical nightmare and a hazard but come on if you can secure screens in the “payable” areas then surely you can dot a few about in the other deck areas. They seem to think that everyone who uses the loungers must want a tan, there are many areas inside to relax and chill, whilst it is in the shade if you don’t like the sun it is not that same as lying on the open deck whilst cruising.
The kids area’s do seem to have shade in the outdoor areas and I know we as adults should know better but do we?
Many experts agree that too much exposure to the sun and you risk skin cancer, too little and you’ll lack vitamin D, yet I read recently that the UK has a serious case of vitamin D deficiency, potentially putting two-thirds of us at higher risk of conditions, including heart disease, thinning bones and depression. This has to be down to everyone slapping on the high factors and covering up as much as possible when outside, due to all the press about how damaging too much sun can be. One extreme to the other orange tans or super white!
Experts suggest boosting levels of the vitamin D, which is made by the body from the action of sunlight on skin, by spending time outdoors. At the same time, rates of malignant melanomas are increasing faster than for any other cancer in the UK. So understandably, doctors are insisting use plenty of sun cream and to avoid roasting in the sun for hours. It’s good for you but be careful, Confusing or what!
The trick is to sun bathe quickly but not to burn. Cancer Research UK spokeswoman Yinka Ebo said: “Yes, we need some sun to make vitamin D, but the most important thing is still to avoid getting sunburnt, as it increases your risk of the most dangerous form of skin cancer.
“The good news is, it’s perfectly possible to strike the balance between making enough vitamin D and not raising your risk of skin cancer as the amount of time in the sun that you need to make enough of the nutrient is less than makes your skin redden.”
According to the British Association of Dermatologists, the best way to do this is to get a few minutes of sun around the middle of the day without sunscreen, and the more skin exposed for that short time the better. By that I assume they mean in the UK and not on the Spanish Costas in August, when even the Spanish avoid it.
As I said I am not one to lie in the sun, I bore too quickly, and it is too hot, I prefer to potter about in it, and like a light tan rather than the Madge from Benidorm look.
I know you all know this but it seem that many of you leave this knowledge behind at check in !
Always apply sun protection before tanning. Going into the sun without using sunscreen greatly increases your risk for cancer.
Sunscreen and sunblock must be reapplied every two hours, or after entering water.
Know when and how long to tan. UV radiation is at its highest between 10:00am and 4:00pm, so be extra cautious during these times. Try to tan slowly and seek shade often, to minimize damage, one hour a day is a safe amount of time. We are just not used to the sun and forget that is IS stronger abroad.
Do not be tempted to spend longer in the sun than you would without sunscreen, the higher the factor does not mean the longer you can spend in the sun, studies show people burn more when they use higher factors because they get a false sense of security.
Mad Dogs and Englishmen go out in the midday sun!! So true, when I am in Spain, especially in the South of the country they still have the traditional siesta time from about 1-5 where they lunch, sleep etc and the only people you see out in the midday sun is us brit’s and northern Europeans.
It is also vital that you limit your exposure to the strong summer sun between the hottest hours of 11am and 3pm – sit in the shade and wear a hat and T-shirt to protect your skin. Sunstroke can ruin your holiday, don’t let it.
