Pioneers in the cruise Industry

You may or may not have heard that the Carnival Corporation have commissioned three natural gas-powered vessels to be built for them, in principal at least.

Green world

There has long been concern about large cruise vessels polluting the oceans.  Some ports like Tampa in Florida have banned all the large ships from using their facilities sticking with the smaller vessels and then of course there is Venice that famously banned the ships and just when we had been telling our customers they could not sail into Venice, then did a U-turn on its decision and let them back in for fear of losing customer to the city.

German and Finnish shipbuilders Meyer Werft and Meyer Turku have been tasked with delivering the three very much next-generation cruise ships that will be fully powered by Liquefied Natural Gas.

Carnival Corporation said two of the new LNG-powered ships are designated for its Carnival Cruise Line, and will be built by Meyer Turku at its shipyard in Turku, Finland, with delivery dates expected in 2020 and 2022.

The third is anew ship for P&O Cruises UK will be built by Meyer Werft at its shipyard in Papenburg, Germany, with an expected delivery date in 2020.

In addition, they had already taken orders for Germany-based AIDA Cruises and Italy-based Costa Cruises, making agreements in place to build seven LNG-powered cruise ships across four of its global cruise brands in coming years.

The first of which will launch in 2019 if all goes to plan.

I think it is right that cruise lines who make these huge ships should start to consider the environmental impact more and based on Carnival Corporation’s next-generation “green cruising” ship design, these new vessels will be part of the first generation of cruise ships to be fully powered by LNG, which is an industry first and an environmental breakthrough that will produce the most efficient ships in the company’s history.

“We are proud to be at the forefront of introducing LNG-powered ships to the cruise industry, working with our partners to achieve shipbuilding breakthroughs like this that will help us produce the most efficient and sustainable ships we have ever built,” said Arnold Donald, chief executive, of Carnival Corporation.

What do you think about the way the cruise market is growing and all the new ships which will be joining the already vast fleet of Ships which make up the cruise market today?

Do you think more ports should restrict the size of vessel going there?

Do you think cruise lines could be doing anything else to protect the environment?
