Sensible at Sea?

In the past few months there have been some tragic accidents on-board cruise ships. From the crew member who died on a carnival ship whilst doing maintenance on the lift to the latest tragedy on the Harmony of the Seas which has left one crew member dead and two others fighting for their lives.

I am not here to discuss these accidents, although I would like to pass on my condolences to the family’s of the crew members killed and of course to their colleagues and I hope that the two members who are in hospital make a full recovery.

Incidents like this are sad, but the reason for my post is this:

Is people’s Stupidity giving Cruise Safety a Bad Rep?

Just recently there seem to be all sorts of instances of people behaving like idiots and putting cruising in a bad light.

The latest is a woman who fell off a Ship in the South Korean sea

WOMAN FALLS OVERBOARD

Lifebuoy

I do not know how tall this person was but I am 5ft 10 and most ship rails sit just above waist height on me making it comfortable to lean on to look out. To actual fall over this rail you would have to jump up and lean right over so it begs the question how did she accidentally lean over and fall in? Someone is telling porky’s I think. Whether it was drink related or just sheer stupidity we will never know but I am 100% sure that it was not just ‘I accidentally leaned too far!!!!’

There have been a number of things we have reported recently from a girl sitting on a banister rail and falling backwards down the stairs on a ship to a man jumping off his balcony into the sea and swimming to shore. A Toddler found wandering around deck at 3am in the morning?  None of these things are really the fault of the cruise line, it is just stupid or careless people doing stupid things. What would have happened if the girl had broken her back or if the man who jumped overboard had drowned. Who would the families blame and who would really be at fault?

I have personally witnessed a group of teenage boys holding their friends under the water in a Jacuzzi late at night. I have seen children climbing the rails with parents at their side who seem oblivious to what they are doing and seen many a passenger in a drunken stupor staggering around the deck in the early hours of the morning.

Don’t you think as passengers we have a duty to be a little sensible when at sea? These people are quick to blame the cruise lines when things go wrong but if they are not at fault it is not really fair.

It makes me so angry when people refuse to accept responsibility for their own actions.

Angry

No one wants to stop people enjoying themselves but safety has to come first.

Safety first

Have you ever witnessed someone doing something silly on a cruise ship? If so I would love to hear what?

So to anyone who is thinking that Cruising is not safe. It is as long as you use a little bit of common sense.
