I have just returned from a transatlantic cruise (Malaga to Miami) on Fred Olsen's Braemar and the weather was perfect the whole way - warm and sunny and ideal for getting a tan on deck. The great advantage of travelling east to west is that the trade winds are usually following the ship so that the wind factor is negligible. As the book says, use sunscreen and take it easy the first few days. There are many other activities to keep you occupied when you aren't sunning yourself.

I agree wholeheartedly with the skin cancer argument having just had a growth removed. Suntanned skin is unhealthy skin whichever way vain people want to argue the fact. All it ever does is to make your eyes, nails and teeth APPEAR brighter. Be warned. On the bright side there's always plenty to do on board. Sunbed fighting? Often we struggle to get a seat in the bar for the daily quiz!

I too will be on the prowl for a sunbed! Flying from Manchester to Lisbon on 7th December - looks like I am having to pick the tickets up from the airport as they have "gone missing" in the post! This concerns me but various people keep telling me its nothing to worry about, but I cannot help the worry of getting to the airport and there being no tickets waiting for me!!!!!

As long as you have proof of your booking and instructions to pick up the tickets at the Thomson desk you should be OK.

We are exactly the same we have been told our tickets were posted 2 November but have not arrived so we were told they must have been lost in the post!!! We are flying from (hopefully) Birmingham and have to pick our tickets up at the airport at 6.30 am on the 7 December. hopefully we will see you on the Destiny, another 2 concerned passengers.

I too was given the postage date of 2nd November! Our flight is due to leave Manchester at 09.30 so will be at the ticket desk around 6.30 too. Maybe see you on the ship - usually to be spotted in a bar or swimming pool - or anywhere where there arnt too many people wanting to be in the same place, ie the pool is best when everyone else has gone off 'discovering' where-ever the ship has docked! Only 1 more week of work to go - but its going to be a busy one!

Baggage allowance seems to vary on who you speak to at Thomson - the brochure says 25kg in the hold and 5 kg cabin ( but if you have 25 kg in the hold only 23 kg max per bag ) - if you ask Thomsons when you chase your tickets they tell me it is 20 kg in the hold and 5 kg in the cabin. The brchure on page 198 ( july 08 edition ) says 25 kg. Have no tickets bdespite booking 8 weeks ago and not sure what we are allowed !

The following is from the Thomson Website. And after another call withthe company I booked with I have now been told that Thomson have suffered a serious ticketting problem and are working hard to rectify it. Therefore I apologies to the postmen who I have accused in my head of nicking my tickets! Thomsonfly Baggage Allowance - Departures between August 2008 - April 2009 Standard luggage allowance Each customer is entitled to a total baggage allowance of 25kg, of which a maximum 10kg can be taken into the cabin as hand luggage (max. dimensions: 55x40x20cm). The maximum allowance for checked in baggage is 20kg. If your total baggage weight exceeds your total allowance or checked in allowance, excess hold baggage will be accepted and charged for carriage subject to the conditions of acceptance of excess baggage. No single item of baggage may exceed 32kg. Other bags such as handbags, laptop bags or laptop computers must be carried within the single item of cabin baggage. We recommend that video cameras, mobile telephones and other valuable items should be carried as hand luggage; they must not exceed the dimensions outlined above. There are restrictions on what you may carry in your hand luggage – please read carefully the information enclosed with your tickets. Customers will only be able to carry Hypodermic Syringes in their hand luggage if supporting an approved "Diabetic Doctors letter". Customers carrying such items must also advise check-in staff. Please note that you must be able to lift hand luggage into the overhead storage compartments yourself.
