my family are from Madeira and I am lucky enough to visit several times a year. Do not take a ship organised excursion as you can easily find your way around. The walk from the dock to the town is straightforward and will take you 15 mins if you walk slowly. You can then walk even slower along the whole promenade/Marina for about 20 mins and perhaps take a cable car ride (approx 9 euro each) upto Monte. Here you can walk around a small botanical garden which is free if charge, and either come back down by cable car or basket ride if you dare ! There are several little cafes along the promenade, and at the top of the cable car ride so worthwhile stopping for a little coffe and portuguse custard tart. Alternitivly walk into town and do adeal with a taxi driver for an island tour, expect to pay about 50 euro for full day. you can pretty much see whole front of island in this time.Enjoy your day its a beautiful island !

An extra comment about visiting Madeira port, there are now around town sightseeing buses from the promenade area, where you can get on and off where you like on the tour around Funchal. One of the bus stops is right by the port area on the promenade, so it is easy to get on the bus there and pay on the bus. When I was in Madeira in January we got on at the cable car stop after paying and went on route around Funchal and my friend got off at the ship port stop but I continued on the bus to do the complete course. There are headphones on the bus giving running commentaries in each language. It didn't cost too much around 8/10 euros and was a good tour around Funchal and the surrounding areas up forwards the mountain villages. The complete tour lasted about 1 hour but you can continue around more than once to take in all the sights. This is a good idea if you are unable to walk around for too long and good a good insight into the Funchal area. I have also been on the cable car on a previous trip which I also enjoyed. It is a lovely island and worth a visit. Enjoy.

For Madeira, La Palma, Tenerife, Cadiz and Vigo the main towns are easily walkable from the dockside with walking times ranging from a few minutes to about half an hour or so depending on how fast you like to walk. Maderia is the furthest away at about 20 mins/30mins. For Lisbon as mentioned in an answer from another reviewer, it depends where you dock but you will normally be at least 20 minutes on a bus away from the main town centre. There are good walks along the river with plenty of cafes, restaurants and pretty views or there were taxis readily available. Enjoy your trip.

Madeira - about 10 minute walk to the dock gates then another 10 minutes or so along the road to the the main promenade. La Palma, Gran Canaria - short walk to shops and promenade. La Palma the Island - short walk to the town, Tenerife - 15 minutes walk and plenty to have a look round.

Madeira, quite a lengthy walk from the ships berth into Funchal. You may be lucky and have a water taxi available from the berth across to the marina. La Palma, not too bad a walk into the main town. Tenerife, usually quite a long walk from the berth to the dock gates, but then just a short distance to the main shopping area. Cadiz, is again not too bad for walking in to the town of Cadiz. Lisbon, more difficult as it depends on which berth you dock at. All berths however are reasonably close to one or another of the places of interest, and can be walked. Vigo, is a short walk to the town.
